Mega Greninja ex leads Chaos Rising at $221.51, with Mega Greninja ex ($192.63) and Cinccino ex ($65.63) behind it. The top three alone are 90% of the estimated master-set cost — plan these purchases first and the rest of the set follows on a normal budget.

Acquisition Strategy

  • • Monitor price trends - chase cards often fluctuate based on tournament results and influencer coverage
  • • Consider condition flexibility - a LP/MP copy can save 30-50% on vintage cards
  • • Check multiple marketplaces - prices vary significantly between TCGPlayer, eBay, and local stores
  • • Buy during market dips - major releases and reprints often cause temporary price drops

About this set

Mega Greninja ex is why most people care about this set. The SIR (#116) and gold MHR (#122) are the two most expensive cards in the Mega Evolution series to date, driven by Greninja's history: it had a lead role in the XY anime, its Mega Evolution design is one of the most distinctive from that era, and in 2016 its competitive variants were genuinely dominant at tournament level. Collectors who built around the original XY Greninja cards know exactly why this reprint matters.

The three English-exclusive additions give EN collectors something the Japanese Ninja Spinner product never had. Mega Gallade ex and Krookodile ex are fully numbered main set cards, not promos. Adversity Policy is a trainer worth watching once the competitive community settles on its testing. Japan got 83 of these cards; EN collectors got all of them.

The three-prize Mega ex rule creates a different kind of card than most modern ex. Running a Mega ex means your opponent only needs to KO two of them to win the game. That tradeoff makes Mega ex genuinely interesting to build around, and at 86 base cards with a standard single reverse holo pattern, the non-Greninja master set is realistically cheap to finish.

Where Chaos Rising fits in the era

Chaos Rising is the fourth main expansion of the Mega Evolution series, translated from the Japanese Ninja Spinner set with three English-exclusive numbered additions. Mega Gallade ex (#048/086) originated from the January 2026 Japanese Mega Gallade ex Special Set; Krookodile ex (#055/086) and Adversity Policy (#074/086) came from November 2025 Japanese gym tournament promos. The Pokemon Company's consistent policy of folding high-profile JP promos into EN main sets gives Chaos Rising three cards that the Japanese Ninja Spinner product never included.

The series timeline: ME01 (base Mega Evolution), Phantasmal Flames (ME2), Ascended Heroes (ME2pt5), Perfect Order (ME03), and now Chaos Rising (me04). The Mega Evolution revival is tied to the Pokémon Legends: Z-A video game cycle, and each set in the series has debuted Mega Evolution Pokémon ex that never received modern cards before, and Chaos Rising continues that with Mega Pyroar ex, Mega Greninja ex, Mega Floette ex, Mega Gallade ex, and Mega Dragalge ex.

Collecting challenges

Chaos Rising has 86 base cards, each with a standard single reverse holo counterpart, plus 36 secret rares numbered #087-122. That is approximately 208 unique cards for the core master set, all of which fit in one standard 360-card binder. The single reverse holo pattern means no multi-pattern complexity like Ascended Heroes, and the small base set means one booster box covers most of the commons, uncommons, and reverses.

The real challenge is the Mega Greninja problem. The SIR (#116) and MHR (#122) together represent roughly half the total master set budget for collectors who want both. These two cards alone separate a modest completion budget from a serious one. Collectors who skip the Greninja tier get one of the most completable master sets in the ME series. Those who include it are building a grail set.

Promo acquisition adds 6 slots if you count everything: the PC-stamped Fennekin promo (exclusive to the Pokemon Center ETB), the standard Fennekin promo (standard ETB), and four Build & Battle Box foil variants (Crobat, Ampharos, Delphox, Goodra) distributed randomly at prerelease events. Prereleases ran May 9-17 and are now behind us, so the B&B promos are either secondary market purchases or wait until the general retail B&B Box release on June 5.

Post-release, Crobat's IR status is confirmed and the chase prices have started softening from day-one peaks. The set is settling into its real shape now that pre-release speculation is behind us.

Sleeved Booster Pack

Avoid

1 pack · MSRP $6.00 · Market $6.89 · $6.89/pack

Single pack at a premium per-pack rate. Convenience purchase only, useful as a gift or impulse buy, not a collection strategy. Released May 22 with the main launch.

Build & Battle Box

Avoid

4 packs · MSRP $29.99 · Market $43.72 · $10.93/pack

Poor per-pack value but was essential at prerelease events (May 9-17) for exclusive foil promos: Crobat, Ampharos, Delphox, or Goodra (random per box). General retail release June 5. Do not buy four boxes expecting all four promo variants. The variant is random.

Collecting strategy

Most cards in this set are worth around $0.25 as singles. Opening packs is the fun way to build your base of commons and uncommons with a chance at lucky pulls — but chase cards are statistically unlikely from sealed product. For most master set collectors, the smart approach is packs for bulk, singles for the rest.

The route for this set

One booster box for bulk collection. Buy all six SIRs as singles after 3-4 weeks of price stabilization: Mega Greninja SIR, Cinccino SIR, Mega Dragalge SIR, AZ's Tranquility SIR, Mega Floette SIR, and Roxie's Performance SIR. Skip the Mega Greninja MHR. Includes reverse holos and promos (PC ETB for stamped Fennekin, secondary market or June 5 retail for the four Build & Battle variants). NM condition throughout.

Community insights

From collector discussions, forums, and social media.

What collectors are saying

  • Post-release data settled the chase hierarchy where pre-release tracking had it inverted. Mega Greninja ex SIR (#116) sat above the gold MHR (#122) on day one and has stayed there through the first 48 hours of secondary trading. Both have eased from their day-one peaks as supply caught up with chase hunters, with the SIR holding a clear premium over the MHR. The illustrated full-art carried this card past the gold variant, which is unusual for the Mega Evolution era.
  • Cinccino ex SIR is the unanimous surprise of the release. The chinchilla Pokemon has no Mega form, no legendary status, and almost no anime presence outside Generation V. None of that mattered. It jumped straight into the upper price tier on day one and has held there, with pull videos and Twitter posts singling out the illustration (Cinccino bouncing on a pile of pillows and blankets) as the prettiest non-Mega card in the set. The cult demand from Gen V collectors is real but narrow.
  • Froakie, Frogadier, and Greninja form a connected-art Illustration Rare triptych at the entry tier of the secret rare run. Multiple Reddit threads have lined the three cards up as a single display piece. Froakie IR has dropped to roughly half its pre-purchase peak, but the triptych as a set has held collector attention better than any individual Mega Floette or Mega Dragalge SIR.
  • English printing adds three numbered cards that were not in the Japanese Ninja Spinner set: Mega Gallade ex (#048/086, from the January 2026 JP Mega Gallade ex Special Set), Krookodile ex (#055/086) and Adversity Policy (#074/086), both from November 2025 JP gym promos. All three are numbered into the main set, not added as unnumbered promos. EN collectors got more than JP did.
  • Important rules clarification still making the rounds: every Mega Evolution Pokémon ex in this set gives the opponent 3 prize cards when KO'd, not 2 like a regular ex. Applies to Pyroar ex (#015), Greninja ex (#022), Floette ex (#035), Gallade ex (#048), and Dragalge ex (#065). The rule has been in place since ME01 but new players coming in for the Mega Evolution era keep tripping over it.
  • At 86 base cards, Chaos Rising is one of the smallest sets in the Mega Evolution series, just below Perfect Order's 88. The non-Greninja master set is very doable. Subreddit sentiment leans toward finishing the base set plus the affordable SIRs and treating Mega Greninja as a grail tier purchase rather than required completion.
  • Build & Battle prerelease events (May 9-17) handed out four random foil promo variants: Crobat, Ampharos, Delphox, and Goodra. Reception has been mixed. Collectors praise the artwork quality but several Reddit threads have noted that none of the four are crowd-favorite Pokemon, which has dampened secondary market interest. All four combined still run cheap on the secondary market right now.
  • Pokemon Center ETB stock moved fast on May 22 but did not sell out within hours the way Perfect Order's PC ETB did in March. Restock notifications are still firing as of the 23rd. The exclusive PC-stamped Fennekin promo is the only reason to pick the PC ETB over the standard ETB. If you missed the launch window, the secondary market premium over MSRP is currently modest.
  • Pre-purchase availability was wider than expected. Best Buy, Target, and Amazon all carried Chaos Rising product for pre-order in early May, with multiple collectors reporting Best Buy boxes shipping a day or two before May 22. Pokemon Center pre-orders shipped on the 22nd as scheduled. The 'launch day scramble' was less acute than it usually is, partly because the simultaneous worldwide release pulled inventory across more channels.
  • Crobat (#093/086) confirmed as Illustration Rare in the English printing, resolving the pre-release rarity uncertainty. Current TCGPlayer market sits where you would expect for a mid-tier IR in the era. Ho-Oh, Keldeo, and Goodra got downgraded from IR to Holo Rare versus the Japanese printing, but Crobat held its IR status.
  • Pitch Black is officially confirmed for July 17, 2026 (prereleases July 4-12), headlined by Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Chandelure ex, and Mega Excadrill ex. Chaos Rising is the fourth set in the Mega Evolution series, not the final chapter. Budget collectors should decide now whether they want to complete both sets or pick one. The Pitch Black cycle starts in seven weeks.

Tips from the community

  • Before spending anything, decide your Mega Greninja position: SIR only, MHR only, both, or neither. This single decision plus the non-Greninja SIR cluster determines whether your master set lands at the modest end of the budget or roughly five times that.
  • For the non-Greninja SIRs (Cinccino, Dragalge, AZ's Tranquility, Mega Floette, Roxie's Performance), wait 2-3 weeks for first-week inflation to settle further. Prices have already softened 5-15% from day-one peaks and the trajectory is downward through the 60-day window.
  • For Mega Greninja ex SIR and MHR, the day-one peak is already behind us. The SIR gave back a meaningful slice of its peak within 48 hours. Buy when you see a listing below the going market rate with strong centering rather than chasing the headline number.
  • The Pokemon Center ETB is the only source for the PC-stamped Fennekin promo. If the PC stamp matters to your collection, buy soon. Stock has moved slower than Perfect Order's PC ETB but the exclusive promo will keep secondary prices above MSRP. The current premium is still modest.
  • With 86 base cards and a standard single reverse holo pattern, one booster box covers most of your commons, uncommons, and reverse holos. Do not buy a second box trying to finish the set. Fill remaining gaps with cheap singles. Second boxes hit diminishing returns hard on a set this size.
  • Community pull rate data from an early pack sample puts SIR and IR odds meaningfully longer than the era estimates we used pre-release, and the odds of any one specific SIR are longer still across the six SIR slots. Do not gamble on sealed product for a specific chase card.
  • Build & Battle prerelease events (May 9-17) are behind us now. The four promo variants (Crobat, Ampharos, Delphox, Goodra) are available individually on the secondary market, and picking up all four combined still costs little. General retail Build & Battle Boxes drop June 5 if you missed prereleases.
  • AZ's Tranquility SIR pairs with Mega Floette ex SIR (#117) for the AZ/Eternal Flower Floette storyline arc. Both cards depict the Legends: Z-A resolution. Buy them as a pair to complete the full storyline display. Listings for the pair appear together regularly on TCGPlayer.
  • Grading the Mega Greninja ex SIR makes economic sense at its current raw price. A PSA 10 on a clean copy could realistically reach roughly double raw. The MHR also justifies grading on clean copies. Verify centering at 55/45 or better on both axes. Wait 4-6 weeks post-release for the graded market to settle before submitting in volume.
  • Define all six promo slots before you start buying: PC-stamped Fennekin (PC ETB only), standard Fennekin promo (standard ETB), and four B&B variants (Crobat, Ampharos, Delphox, Goodra). If all six are mandatory for your master set, the time to plan is now, not after Pitch Black launches in July.
  • Sleeved Booster Packs released May 22 alongside the main product line. The Mega Moonlit Tin and Lumiose City Mini Tin both release June 5. If you want to open product right now, focus on booster bundles and ETBs rather than waiting for the tin wave.

Market insights

  • The chase ladder settled into three tiers within 48 hours of launch. Mega Greninja ex SIR and MHR sit at the top by a wide margin. A mid-cluster of Cinccino, Mega Dragalge, AZ's Tranquility, and Mega Floette SIRs holds the middle. Roxie's Performance SIR sits at the bottom. The pre-release Japanese estimates for the non-Greninja SIRs were too low by 2-4x.
  • Post-launch price softening is already visible. Mega Greninja SIR gave back a sizeable slice of its day-one peak within 48 hours, and Cinccino and Mega Dragalge have both ticked down a few percent. The softening is typical post-release glide and will probably continue for 30-60 days before stabilising.
  • The 6 SIRs (#116-121) plus 1 MHR (#122) account for the entire high-value secret rare tier. At current pricing, Mega Greninja SIR plus MHR represent roughly 65% of the total chase tier dollar value, down from the 95% pre-release JP trackers suggested. The non-Greninja SIRs are pulling more weight than expected.
  • Total non-Greninja master set cost (base set plus reverses plus secret rares, buying SIRs as singles at current prices) has already come down from the day-one projection. Adding the Greninja MHR pushes the total up by more than half, and adding both Greninja cards more than doubles it. Those totals assume continued softening over the next 60 days.
  • Booster display box pricing has not stabilised yet. Pokemon Center and Best Buy sell direct at MSRP while the secondary market on eBay and TCGPlayer swings above and below that depending on seller. Expect the floor to push down toward Perfect Order's box MSRP within 4-6 weeks as retail distribution normalises. Do not pay a secondary market premium for boxes unless you need them at launch.
  • Standard single reverse holo pattern means reverse holos carry no scarcity premium. Most reverses outside of popular Pokemon trade at bulk rates. The reverse holo tier is not the budget obstacle for this set.
  • The English-exclusive Krookodile ex and Mega Gallade ex add competitive play options that JP players couldn't get from a standard booster product. The competitive community is currently testing both. Mega Gallade ex has shown up in early Standard format builds via TCG Live. Adversity Policy is being evaluated. If either card proves meta-relevant, speculative demand from players could push singles above current collector-driven levels.
  • The Froakie/Frogadier/Greninja connected-art triptych at IRs #88, #89, and #99 has emerged as a budget chase set. Froakie carries the biggest share of the combined cost and has already fallen to roughly half its pre-purchase peak, with the Frogadier and Greninja IRs cheaper still. Collectors who can't justify Mega Greninja SIR are picking up the triptych instead.
  • Pitch Black arriving July 17, 2026 creates a near-term budget squeeze for ME-era collectors. Committing to a premium-tier Chaos Rising completion leaves less capital for Pitch Black seven weeks later. The two-set Mega Evolution year is a real budgeting problem if you want both.

Watch out for

  • First-week singles prices were inflated. They've already cooled meaningfully (Mega Greninja SIR gave back a large slice of its day-one peak inside 48 hours). Buying at the day-one peak was the wrong call. Buying now, two days in, is still early. Two to three weeks out gives you the cleaner entry on non-Greninja SIRs.
  • Mega ex give 3 prize cards when KO'd, not 2. Every Mega Evolution Pokémon ex in this set (Pyroar ex #015, Greninja ex #022, Floette ex #035, Gallade ex #048, Dragalge ex #065) carries the rule: 'When your Mega Evolution Pokémon ex is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 3 Prize cards.' This has been true since ME01. Any pull-value calculation or deck-strategy advice treating Mega ex as 2-prize trades is wrong.
  • The Pokemon Center ETB contains 11 packs plus 1 PC-stamped Fennekin promo plus 1 standard Fennekin promo. There is no metallic Mega Greninja insert. That claim traces to AI-generated retailer FAQ copy that got copied across multiple sites pre-launch. Verified against the official Pokemon.com product page, Pokemoncenter.com listing, and post-launch unboxings.
  • Build & Battle promo variant is random. Buying four B&B boxes does not guarantee one of each. Plan for duplicates. The cheapest path to all four variants now that prereleases are behind us is buying singles on the secondary market, or general retail B&B Boxes on June 5.
  • Community-observed SIR pull rates are running meaningfully longer than the era estimate, and the odds of pulling any one specific SIR are longer still across the six SIR slots. Do not build a budget around guaranteed pulls from sealed product.
  • Pack weighers specifically target Mega Evolution era products because the SIR-slot packs are measurably heavier. Buy sealed booster boxes only from MSRP retail sources (Target, Walmart, local game stores, Pokemon Center) or established online retailers with sealed guarantees. Third-party marketplace sealed boxes carry meaningful weighed-pack risk.
  • Do not confuse Chaos Rising cards with Perfect Order cards when buying singles. Both are recent Mega Evolution era sets and the secret rare numbering ranges overlap. Check set symbols and card numbers carefully, particularly for Mega Greninja ex which exists in multiple sets across the era.

Mega Evolution Chaos Rising grading guide

Which Mega Evolution Chaos Rising cards are worth the $20+/card grading fee? PSA 10 premiums vary significantly by rarity tier. See our complete grading guide for how grading works, costs, and international submission options.

Tier 1 - High Priority Grading

Worth grading
Mega Greninja ex SIR (#116/086), Mega Greninja ex MHR (#122/086)
PSA 10: $900-1,500Raw: $400-505Premium: 1.8x-2.5x

The two highest-value cards in the set by a wide margin. SIR currently $470-505 and MHR $400-485 (both down from day-one peaks). PSA 10 premiums clear submission costs comfortably. The SIR outsold the MHR on day one, inverting pre-release Japanese tracking. Only submit copies with 55/45+ centering on both axes and clean surface. Wait 4-6 weeks post-release for the graded market to stabilize before sending a batch.

Tier 2 - Worth Grading on Clean Copies

Cinccino ex SIR (#119/086, ~$109), Mega Dragalge ex SIR (#118/086, ~$105), AZ's Tranquility SIR (#120/086, ~$84)
PSA 10: $140-200Raw: $84-109Premium: 1.3x-1.8x

All three sit above the PSA economic-submission floor of ~$50 raw. The Cinccino and Dragalge illustrations have specifically been called out as standout art in community discussions. AZ's Tranquility and Mega Floette pair thematically for the AZ storyline arc. Submit only copies with 55/45+ centering and clean edges. Marginal copies are better held raw at this price point.

Tier 3 - Personal Collection Only

Skip grading
Mega Floette ex SIR (#117/086, ~$75), Roxie's Performance SIR (#121/086, ~$55)
PSA 10: $80-130Raw: $55-75Premium: 1.3x-1.7x

Bottom of the SIR ladder. Raw value covers submission costs but margin is tight after fees and shipping. Grade only for personal display on cards you personally pulled. Do not submit speculatively at these price points.

Tier 4 - Never Grade

Skip grading
Ultra Rares (including Mega Greninja ex #100, ~$33), Illustration Rares (including the Froakie/Frogadier/Greninja triptych), Reverse holofoils, Commons and uncommons
PSA 10: $10-30Raw: $0.50-33Premium: 1.5x-2.5x

Grading costs eat the premium margin entirely at these raw values. The Froakie IR peaked at $54 in pre-purchase trading but has settled to about $26, well below the grading threshold. Keep all non-chase rarity cards raw. Concentrate grading budget on the Mega Greninja ex tier.

Before you submit — PSA checklist, fees, and tips▾

PSA 10 requirements

Centering
55/45 minimum front and back. Modern SIRs frequently fail here — pre-screen every candidate.
Corners
Sharp, no whitening under magnification. Sleeve the moment you pull the card.
Surface
No scratches, print lines, or holo damage. SIR foils are especially vulnerable from the factory.
Edges
No chipping or fraying. Inspect under bright light.

PSA service tiers

Value
$20/card, 4–6 month turnaround. Right for raw values $75–500.
Regular
$50/card, 6–8 week turnaround. Right for raw values $500+.
Express
$75–150/card, 2–3 week turnaround. Only worth it above $1,000 raw.

Budget for a 5-card submission: $135–170 once you add shipping, insurance, and supplies.

Tips from experienced submitters

  • • Pre-screen with a loupe — 70%+ of modern cards fail centering.
  • • PSA Collectors Club ($99/year) pays for itself with 2–3 value-tier submissions.
  • • Ship in batches of 10+ to amortize shipping and insurance.
  • • PSA 9 typically sells at 40–60% of PSA 10 — still a premium over raw.

Does Chaos Rising have a booster display box?▾

Yes. Unlike special expansions (which sometimes have no booster box), Chaos Rising is a standard main set with traditional 36-pack booster display boxes. MSRP is essentially identical at Pokemon Center and Best Buy. Secondary market currently trades close to MSRP and should settle toward it within 4-6 weeks.

What is in the Pokemon Center ETB?▾

The Pokemon Center ETB contains 11 booster packs, 1 Pokemon Center-exclusive stamped Fennekin promo card, and 1 standard Fennekin promo card. There is no metallic Mega Greninja insert. That claim traces to AI-generated retailer copy and is not supported by the official Pokemon.com product page, Pokemoncenter.com listing, or post-launch unboxings.

What cards are English-exclusive additions?▾

Three cards were added for the EN printing and numbered into the main set: Mega Gallade ex (#048/086), sourced from the January 2026 Japanese Mega Gallade ex Special Set; Krookodile ex (#055/086) and Adversity Policy (#074/086), both from November 2025 Japanese gym tournament promos. All three are numbered into the main set, not released as unnumbered promo cards.

What products release on May 22 versus June 5?▾

May 22 (main launch): booster display box, standard ETB, Pokemon Center ETB, booster bundle, and sleeved booster packs. June 5 (second wave): Build & Battle Box general retail, Mega Moonlit Tin, and Lumiose City Mini Tin (sold individually and in displays of 6). Build & Battle Boxes were available earlier at prerelease events May 9-17.

Is Chaos Rising the last Mega Evolution set?▾

No. Mega Evolution Pitch Black is officially confirmed for July 17, 2026 worldwide, with prereleases July 4-12. It features Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Chandelure ex, and Mega Excadrill ex. Japan's roadmap continues further with Storm Emeralda (July 31) and a 30th Anniversary Celebration set in September. Chaos Rising is the fourth set in the series.

How does Chaos Rising compare to Perfect Order for master set collectors?▾

Both are standard main sets in the ME series with single reverse holo patterns and booster box availability. Chaos Rising has 86 base cards versus Perfect Order's 88, nearly identical scope. The difference is the chase tier. Perfect Order's top chase cards (Mega Zygarde MHR, Meowth ex SIR) are dramatically cheaper than Chaos Rising's Mega Greninja SIR and MHR. The full non-Greninja SIR cluster in Chaos Rising also runs above Perfect Order's equivalent tier. Perfect Order is a more affordable premium completion. Chaos Rising has a higher grail ceiling and a more expensive SIR floor.

Should I grade Mega Greninja ex SIR or MHR?▾

The SIR makes the strongest grading case at its current raw price. A PSA 10 on a clean copy could realistically bring about double raw. The MHR also clears submission costs with PSA 10 premiums expected at 1.5-2x raw. Wait 4-6 weeks post-release for the graded market to settle before submitting in volume. Only send cards with 55/45 or better centering on both axes. A PSA 8 or 9 still eats the margin at these raw values.

What are the Build and Battle promos and how do I get them?▾

Four exclusive foil promo variants exist: Crobat, Ampharos, Delphox, and Goodra. Each Build & Battle Box randomly contains one of the four. Prerelease events ran May 9-17 and are now behind us. General retail Build & Battle Boxes hit shelves June 5. Secondary market pricing for the four stays low, individually or as a combined lot. None of the four are crowd-favorite Pokemon, which has kept secondary market demand modest.

What are the SIR pull rates?▾

Community pull rate data from a 168-pack sample puts SIRs at long odds (about 1 SIR per 5 booster boxes) and IRs at several packs apart on average. Both numbers are tighter than the 1-in-72 and 1-in-18 era estimates we used pre-release. The Mega Hyper Rare hit at 0% in the 168-pack sample, consistent with the rarer-than-SIR tier. Pull rates aren't officially published by the Pokemon Company. Your actual results will vary.
