Mega Lucario ex leads Mega Evolution at $274.11, with Mega Gardevoir ex ($209.78) and Mega Lucario ex ($208.15) behind it. The top three alone are 45% of the estimated master-set cost — plan these purchases first and the rest of the set follows on a normal budget.

Acquisition Strategy
- • Monitor price trends - chase cards often fluctuate based on tournament results and influencer coverage
- • Consider condition flexibility - a LP/MP copy can save 30-50% on vintage cards
- • Check multiple marketplaces - prices vary significantly between TCGPlayer, eBay, and local stores
- • Buy during market dips - major releases and reprints often cause temporary price drops
What's in the Mega Evolution master set
The Mega Evolution master set is 310 cards: 132 base + 122 reverse holos + 56 secret rares. That covers every printed variant — reverse holofoils, secret rares, and the special-art chase cards numbered past 132/132.
About this set
Mega Evolutions launches an entirely new series post-Scarlet & Violet, marking the triumphant return of Mega Evolution mechanics after 5+ years of absence. Released September 26, 2025, this 180+ card set introduces the groundbreaking Mega Hyper Rare (MHR) tier - the rarest tier in the modern game. Featuring 10 Mega Pokémon ex as playable Double Rares plus ultra-premium chase versions, the set perfectly capitalizes on Gen 6 nostalgia while creating synergy with the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A (2026). The Enhanced Booster Box format with exclusive Bulbasaur promo and dual Elite Trainer Box promos (Riolu/Alakazam) establishes new product innovation standards for the modern era.
Where Mega Evolution fits in the era
Released as the first new series after Scarlet & Violet's 3-year run (2022-2025), Mega Evolutions represents Pokémon TCG's strategic pivot to nostalgia-driven content following S&V market fatigue. The set celebrates Generation 6's 12th anniversary (2013-2025) and the return of Mega Evolution mechanics last seen in Sun & Moon era (2016-2019). Perfect timing alignment with Pokémon Legends: Z-A announcement creates unprecedented hype synergy. The introduction of MHR rarity tier responds to collector demand for ultra-premium chase cards following Prismatic Evolutions' 2025 success. This launch establishes new precedents for post-generation series transitions in the modern era.
Collecting challenges
Completing the 214+ card master set requires navigating the most extreme rarity tier in modern Pokémon - MHR cards pull at such long odds that completing via singles is a serious outlay and pack opening costs multiples more. Product allocation limits prevent bulk purchasing strategies that worked for previous sets. The large set scope with comprehensive reverse holo coverage demands significant storage planning. Early print quality concerns with centering issues on high-value IR/SIR cards complicate grading decisions. The dual appeal to nostalgic collectors and competitive players creates sustained demand that prevents typical post-release price corrections, making patience less valuable than with other modern sets.
Rarity breakdown
| Rarity | Cards | Share of printed set |

| Common | 67 | 51% |

When to buy
Singles panic-priced. Sealed carries 30–50% premium. Wait if you can.
Best window for singles. Chase cards find their floor.
Bulk dips 15–20% on reprint news. Chase cards stay steady.
Sealed and top chase cards begin appreciation cycle.
Collecting strategy
Most cards in this set are worth around $0.28 as singles. Opening packs is the fun way to build your base of commons and uncommons with a chance at lucky pulls — but chase cards are statistically unlikely from sealed product. For most master set collectors, the smart approach is packs for bulk, singles for the rest.
Mix of singles and strategic pack opening
Full master set with both MHRs at singles prices plus one or two starter Mega SIRs graded. Enhanced Booster Box if you find it at MSRP, otherwise skip sealed entirely and buy bulk commons/uncommons as singles.
Community insights
From collector discussions, forums, and social media.
What collectors are saying
- Mega Hyper Rare (MHR) cards are a new ultra-premium rarity tier with extremely long pull odds
- MHR Mega Lucario ex and MHR Mega Gardevoir ex opened high but have settled to less than half their launch prices six months in as supply caught up with demand
- Community analysis of 5,000+ packs shows hit rates: 20% Double Rare, 11% Illustration Rare, 8% Ultra Rare
- Mega Evolution nostalgia driving strong product demand - retailers capping Enhanced Booster Box sales at 2-3 per customer from day one
- First new series post-Scarlet & Violet, and collectors who burned out on S&V are paying attention again
- Competitive players using Mega mechanics for VGC 2026 - several DR Mega ex cards have legitimate tournament viability keeping prices above typical DR floors
- Pokémon Legends: Z-A (2026) announcement landed just before this set dropped - the timing is good for sustained Gen 6 demand
- Community reception: strongest new series launch since Sword & Shield base, by most accounts
- MHR inclusion in master set definition is debated - the current consensus is yes, mostly because skipping them feels like cheating yourself out of the most interesting part of the set
- Prerelease events saw unusually high turnout - Mega Charizard and Mega Blastoise promos sold out before afternoon sessions at most stores
- Enhanced Booster Box flippers cleared shelves within hours at launch, similar to Hidden Fates in 2019 - secondary market prices spiked well above MSRP immediately
- Japanese counterpart expected Q1 2026 - worth watching for 10-20% savings on non-MHR cards once import listings appear
Tips from the community
- Enhanced Booster Box with Bulbasaur promo has the best pack-per-dollar ratio - try to get allocation at multiple retailers rather than paying steep secondary prices
- Both ETBs have promos you can't get anywhere else - Riolu in one version, Alakazam in the other. You need both for a complete promo collection.
- Do not chase MHR cards through packs. The odds are long enough that hitting one statistically requires an enormous outlay in sealed product. Singles have settled well below launch prices. That is your buying window.
- Budget a serious four-figure sum for a 214-card master set via singles, reverse holos included. Add roughly half that again if you want both MHRs.
- SIR cards tend to dip 4-8 weeks post-release as early openers list duplicates. That's the window to buy.
- Complete commons and uncommons first - that's 60% of the card count at about 15% of the total budget. Get the cheap stuff done, then go after chase cards.
- Prerelease promos (Mega Venusaur, Mega Charizard, Mega Blastoise) are affordable to pick up as a trio early. Prices climb after the first few weeks.
- Japanese version works for commons and some ex cards, but MHR cards are English-exclusive at launch. Don't mix versions on the high-value cards.
- Decide your pack budget before you open anything. MHR pull rates will punish undisciplined pack spending harder than almost any previous set.
- Both ETBs require separate purchases - the Riolu and Alakazam promos are not interchangeable and neither appears in any other product
- Enhanced Box restocks tend to happen Fridays. Check your LGS the day before - most stores sell out within hours and don't always update their websites.
- Lillie's Determination is a character SIR with strong nostalgia demand. Character SIRs hold value better than scene cards - buy it during the first dip rather than waiting for a bigger one that may not come.
Market insights
- MHR Mega Lucario and Mega Gardevoir have come down roughly 50% from launch prices. The ceiling for modern singles has moved to Phantasmal Flames Mega Charizard X territory.
- Pull rate breakdown from 5,000+ pack analysis: DR 20%, UR 8%, IR 11%, SIR 1% (1:101), MHR 0.08% (1:1,260)
- Pack EV drops noticeably once bulk commons are valued at realistic resale rather than launch prices
- Enhanced Booster Box is trading well above MSRP on the secondary market - the gap is almost entirely the Bulbasaur promo premium
- SIR Lillie's Determination settled above the non-character SIRs raw. Character SIRs consistently trade above scene cards - the nostalgia premium is real and tends to hold
- Singles route has come down substantially for the 214-card master set after six months of price normalization. Pack opening to hit the same cards statistically still costs several times the singles route
- Double Rare Mega ex cards sit well above typical DR pricing. VGC 2026 playability is keeping the floor up.
- Chase card prices at launch carry a 40-60% premium over where they settle 6-8 weeks later. If you can wait, most SIRs will come down.
- Non-character SIRs now trade at the affordable end of the SIR spectrum. Character and starter Mega SIRs (Lillie, Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise) hold higher than scene cards.
- Sealed Enhanced Booster Boxes have speculative demand similar to Hidden Fates in 2019. Whether that plays out long-term depends on continued Legends: Z-A momentum.
- ETB resale margins are thin - secondary prices sit only modestly above MSRP. Not worth hunting allocation on ETBs unless you specifically want the promos.
- MHR PSA 10 populations will likely stay below 500 copies each - centering issues are real, and the total print run at 0.08% pull rate isn't large. Graded MHR values should track higher as supply stays scarce.
Watch out for
- MHR cards are the rarest modern cards since Pokémon Stars from the ex era. Do not budget for pulling one; budget for buying one.
- Master set completion via singles six months after release costs a small fraction of trying to complete through pack opening. These are not comparable options.
- Enhanced Booster Box allocation is 2-3 per customer at launch. If your retailer isn't enforcing this, they've already sold through to scalpers.
- Early wave print quality has centering issues on IR/SIR cards - PSA 10 rates estimated at 12-18%. Pre-screen before grading submissions.
- Storage for 214+ cards requires more than a standard binder. Budget properly for premium 9-pocket pages, top-loaders for SIR/MHR, and a proper sleeve system.
- Counterfeits are already appearing on high-value MHR cards. Check QR codes, holo patterns, and card stock on any big-ticket purchase, especially from individual sellers.
- Enhanced Booster Box secondary prices climbing past the settled range are speculative. You're paying for scarcity anxiety, not value - the set will be reprinted.
- Buying only one ETB version leaves you with half the exclusive promos. Both Riolu and Alakazam promos are required for completion, and neither appears in other products.
Mega Evolution grading guide
Which Mega Evolution cards are worth the $20+/card grading fee? PSA 10 premiums vary significantly by rarity tier. See our complete grading guide for how grading works, costs, and international submission options.
Tier 1 - Mandatory Grading
Worth gradingStill the two rarest cards in the set at 1:1,260 pull rate. Prices settled ~50% below launch highs but PSA 10 premium remains strong because PSA 10 rates are estimated at 8-12% due to centering issues.
Tier 2 - Recommended Grading
Worth gradingCharacter and premium Mega SIRs hold value. Centering issues affect PSA 10 rates (12-18%). Grade only 60/40+ centering copies.
Tier 3 - Selective Grading
Worth gradingGrade only pristine copies with investment intent. DR Mega ex cards have competitive play demand maintaining floor values.
Tier 4 - Not Worth Grading
Skip gradingGrading costs ($20-75) exceed value premium. Keep raw unless completing PSA 10 master set.
Before you submit — PSA checklist, fees, and tips▾
PSA 10 requirements
- Centering
- 55/45 minimum front and back. Modern SIRs frequently fail here — pre-screen every candidate.
- Corners
- Sharp, no whitening under magnification. Sleeve the moment you pull the card.
- Surface
- No scratches, print lines, or holo damage. SIR foils are especially vulnerable from the factory.
- Edges
- No chipping or fraying. Inspect under bright light.
PSA service tiers
- Value
- $20/card, 4–6 month turnaround. Right for raw values $75–500.
- Regular
- $50/card, 6–8 week turnaround. Right for raw values $500+.
- Express
- $75–150/card, 2–3 week turnaround. Only worth it above $1,000 raw.
Budget for a 5-card submission: $135–170 once you add shipping, insurance, and supplies.
Tips from experienced submitters
- • Pre-screen with a loupe — 70%+ of modern cards fail centering.
- • PSA Collectors Club ($99/year) pays for itself with 2–3 value-tier submissions.
- • Ship in batches of 10+ to amortize shipping and insurance.
- • PSA 9 typically sells at 40–60% of PSA 10 — still a premium over raw.
Storage & protection
Protect your 310-card Mega Evolution master set with archival binders, perfect-fit sleeves, and top loaders for the chase cards. Plan on $150–250 for complete coverage.
Premium binders
Dragon Shield Codex · $30–50
Archival pages, side-loading pockets, acid-free. For 310 cards, plan on 18 double-sided 9-pocket pages.
Perfect-fit sleeves
Every card · $30–50 total
Prevent micro-scratches from sliding cards in and out of binder pockets. You'll need roughly 4 packs for full coverage.
Top loaders
Chase cards · $15–25/pack
Rigid protection for SIRs and grading candidates. Essential for anything over $50 raw.

What is a Mega Hyper Rare (MHR) card and how rare are they?▾
Mega Hyper Rare cards are the top rarity tier in Mega Evolutions, with full-art treatments of Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex. Community pack data from 5,000+ packs puts the pull rate at 0.08% of packs. Hitting one statistically requires opening over 1,200 packs, an enormous outlay in sealed product. Singles have settled to a fraction of their launch peaks six months post-release. That is your buying window.
See also: Phantasmal Flames: gold MHR tier, Pack opening strategy guide
Should I open packs or buy singles for Mega Evolutions?▾
Buy singles for anything worth more than a few dollars. The MHR pull rate (1:1,260 packs) makes chasing them through packs financially absurd. One place where opening makes sense: an Enhanced Booster Box at MSRP gets you the exclusive Bulbasaur promo and knocks out a good chunk of your commons cheaply. If you can get 1-2 at MSRP, open them. Then buy SIRs, MHRs, and IRs as singles.

What products are available for Mega Evolutions?▾
Three products at launch: Enhanced Booster Box (36 packs, exclusive Bulbasaur promo), Elite Trainer Box Riolu Edition (11 packs, exclusive Riolu promo), and Elite Trainer Box Alakazam Edition (11 packs, exclusive Alakazam promo). Both ETBs are needed for complete promo coverage. Enhanced Boxes are limited to 2-3 per customer at most retailers and immediately jumped well above MSRP on the secondary market at launch.
Are the exclusive ETB promos required for a Mega Evolutions master set?▾
Most collectors count them, yes. The Riolu promo is exclusive to the Riolu ETB; the Alakazam promo is exclusive to the Alakazam ETB. Neither appears in any other product. You need both ETBs to get both promos, at MSRP if you can find them or at a markup on the secondary market. The three prerelease promos (Mega Venusaur, Mega Charizard, Mega Blastoise) add more on top depending on timing and condition.
How does Mega Evolutions compare to other recent Pokémon TCG sets?▾
First new series since Sword & Shield base (2020) that's generated genuine excitement across both collectors and players. Community reception is stronger than any mid-run S&V release by a significant margin. MHR cards set a new ceiling for modern singles values - only Prismatic Evolutions and Evolving Skies graded cards come close. Allocation scarcity at launch is on par with Hidden Fates (2019). If you sat out most of Scarlet & Violet, this is a reasonable place to re-engage.

Will Mega Evolutions cards hold their value long-term?▾
MHR cards have the strongest case - PSA 10 populations under 500 copies each, extreme pull rate scarcity, and Legends: Z-A demand providing a demand floor. SIR character cards (Lillie, starter Megas) tend to hold well when nostalgia demand stays active. DR Mega ex cards have VGC playability keeping their prices from collapsing. The main risk is Legends: Z-A underdelivering - if that game disappoints, the Gen 6 hype premium on chase cards could correct 20-30% off launch highs.
Where is the best place to buy Mega Evolutions singles?▾
TCGPlayer is your best source for price comparison and most singles, including MHR cards (now well down from launch pricing). Use Direct shipping on high-value orders. eBay works for graded MHR and SIR cards where PSA authentication matters. r/pkmntcgtrades gets you 10-20% below TCGPlayer on mid-tier cards if you check references and use PayPal G&S. EU collectors should look at CardMarket for 10-15% savings on non-MHR cards. On sealed product, supply has normalized, so buy Enhanced Boxes at or near MSRP rather than paying the old scalper markup.
What are the pull rates for Mega Evolutions rarity tiers?▾
From 5,000+ packs tracked by the community: Double Rare 20%, Illustration Rare 11%, Ultra Rare 8%, Special Illustration Rare 1%, Mega Hyper Rare 0.08%. A standard Enhanced Booster Box (36 packs) statistically yields 7 DRs, 4 IRs, 3 URs, and 0.36 SIRs - you need nearly 3 full boxes to expect one SIR. MHR cards require 35+ Enhanced Boxes on average, a sealed outlay that dwarfs the cost of just buying the single.
