Acquisition Strategy

  • • Monitor price trends - chase cards often fluctuate based on tournament results and influencer coverage
  • • Consider condition flexibility - a LP/MP copy can save 30-50% on vintage cards
  • • Check multiple marketplaces - prices vary significantly between TCGPlayer, eBay, and local stores
  • • Buy during market dips - major releases and reprints often cause temporary price drops

About this set

Seven Mega Attack Rares with comic-book style art. Attack names in Japanese Katakana scream across the card, even in the English version. The lineup covers Mega Diancie, Mega Charizard X, Mega Lucario, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Hawlucha, Mega Dragonite, and Mega Gengar. Their pull rate makes them accessible compared to SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards., and the new rarity tier has been well-received by collectors. God Packs are confirmed, with 3 MARs plus 7 SIRs replacing your bulk slots. The set also features multiple reverse holo patterns including Ball-type foils and Team Rocket stamps, adding unique collecting depth that no other modern set offers.

Where Ascended Heroes fits in the era

Mega Evolution returns from the X/Y era (2013-2016), tying into the Pokémon Legends: Z-A game. The English set combines two Japanese products: MEGA Dream ex (a High Class pack with premium pull rates) and the Start Deck 100 Battle Collection. This hybrid origin explains both the massive card count and the lack of booster boxes. High Class packs in Japan are sold individually at convenience stores, not in 36-pack boxes. The distribution model follows 151 and Prismatic Evolutions, which are special expansions sold through collection boxes and ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. rather than clean booster box rips.

Collecting challenges

This set is a logistical beast. First problem: three reverse holo patterns. Pattern A is the standard Energy symbol reverse. Pattern B is a Ball-type foil (Poké Ball, Love Ball, Friend Ball, Quick Ball, or Dusk Ball depending on the card) OR a Team Rocket 'R' stamp for villain-themed cards. Your checklist needs three columns for each common and uncommon. Second problem: a huge card list with no booster boxes. You're working with ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards., Collection Boxes, and Booster Bundles with higher variance and cost-per-pack than main sets. Third problem: the 22 SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards.. Even with the improved 1-in-70 pull rate, completing the SIR subset by ripping packs is financially irrational. Buy singles for anything with a real price tag. Plan for a marathon, not a sprint.

Pricing: Market · Reliability: medium

When to buy

Weeks 1–4
Launch

Singles panic-priced. Sealed carries 30–50% premium. Wait if you can.

Months 2–4
Stabilization

Best window for singles. Chase cards find their floor.

Months 4–12
Reprint watch

Bulk dips 15–20% on reprint news. Chase cards stay steady.

Year 2+
Long term

Sealed and top chase cards begin appreciation cycle.

Collecting strategy

Most cards in this set are worth around $0.27 as singles. Opening packs is the fun way to build your base of commons and uncommons with a chance at lucky pulls — but chase cards are statistically unlikely from sealed product. For most master set collectors, the smart approach is packs for bulk, singles for the rest.

Estimated Cost
$4,529
Timeframe
3-6 months

Mix of singles and strategic pack opening

1Buy singles for cards over $5
2Open booster boxes for bulk acquisition
3Target NM condition for valuable cards
4Include key reverse holofoils
5Use multiple marketplaces for best prices
The route for this set

Full master set with one reverse variant per card (pick Energy OR Ball-type pattern, not both). Patient singles buying works here since prices are past the early volatility. Booster Bundles for efficient bulk ripping. Include chase SIRs but buy during summer lulls when prices typically soften. The improved pull rates (SIR 1:70, MHR 1:540) mean more supply entering the market over time.

Community insights

From collector discussions, forums, and social media.

What collectors are saying

  • Mega Gengar ex SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. has climbed back to the top of the market on TCGPlayer after cooling earlier in the year. It's the most expensive English card of 2026 so far, and PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 10 slabs are commanding significant premiums over raw copies.
  • God Packs are confirmed. They contain 3 Mega Attack Rares and 7 Special Illustration Rares. If you pull one, sleeve the entire pack immediately. Do not fan through it.
  • The Team Rocket stamp confusion is real. Not every card gets the stamp. Only villain-themed ones like Team Rocket's Dugtrio do. The rest get a Poké Ball pattern (various Ball types: Poké Ball, Love Ball, Friend Ball, Quick Ball, Dusk Ball). People are still overpaying for 'Rocket variants' that don't exist on certain cards.
  • No booster boxes. Ascended Heroes is a special expansion like 151 and Prismatic, so you're stuck buying ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards., Tins, Collection Boxes, and Booster Bundles. The Booster Bundle is the most efficient sealed product now that all waves have launched.
  • 22 SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. in one set, but the pull rate per TCGPlayer's 2,000+ pack study is better than Phantasmal Flames and Mega Evolution. Pulling a specific SIR like Gengar is still a long shot. Singles are still the way.
  • Pikachu ex SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. (the non-Tera version, #276) and Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex SIR are the surprise performers. Mewtwo's villain theming and the N's Zoroark SIR show Rocket-affiliated cards have their own collector base driving prices.
  • Grand Master set collectors confirmed the binder math is brutal. Three reverse patterns per card (Energy, Poké Ball variant, Team Rocket stamp where applicable) either requires 12-pocket pages or a second binder. Most collectors are settling for one reverse variant per card.
  • Mega Attack Rares landed well. Seven cards with comic-book style art: Mega Diancie, Mega Charizard X, Mega Lucario, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Hawlucha, Mega Dragonite, and Mega Gengar. The Katakana attack names on English cards are a first. They're accessible pulls, too.

Tips from the community

  • Mega Gengar ex SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. has reclaimed the top of the chart. The MHR · Mega Hyper RareThe gold card in English Mega Evolution sets, usually the rarest card in the set. gold versions (Mega Charizard Y, Mega Dragonite) corrected harder than the SIRs. This pattern shows up across the Mega Evolution era. If you're picking between a SIR and its MHR counterpart for the same Pokemon, the SIR has been the stronger hold.
  • If you missed the Pokémon Center ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. on Feb 20, the stamped N's Zekrom promo is only available on the secondary market. Expect a premium. It's the only product-exclusive stamp that matters for master set collectors.
  • Before buying any 'Team Rocket stamp' variant, check the Cardrake database. The stamp only appears on specific villain-themed cards. Most Pattern B cards have Ball-type foil, not the Rocket stamp. Misidentifying these is still the most common error in trading.
  • Dedicate a specific section in your binder for Ascended Heroes promos (SVP series). Tech Sticker promos, ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. promos, Poster Collection promos, Pin Collection promos. They add up fast.
  • Booster Bundles (6 packs) are now available and they're the best price-per-pack in the entire product lineup. If you're still ripping packs for set completion, these are what you want.
  • Your checklist needs three slots for commons and uncommons: Non-Holo, Reverse-Energy, and Reverse-Ball/Rocket. Plan your tracker accordingly or you'll lose track of what you're missing.
  • The Mega Hyper Rare pull rate is dramatically better than Mega Evolution's. But there are only 2 MHRs (Mega Charizard Y and Mega Dragonite), so pulling a specific one is still long odds.
  • SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. pull rates are the best of any Mega Evolution era set. If you're going to rip sealed for chase cards at all, this is a friendlier set than Phantasmal Flames or Mega Evolution base.

Market insights

  • TCGPlayer opened 2,000+ packs (God packs excluded) and published confirmed pull rates for every rarity tier.
  • This is the largest English special expansion in the Scarlet & Violet / Mega Evolution block. It combines the Japanese MEGA Dream ex High Class pack and the Start Deck 100 Battle Collection.
  • Special expansion means no 36-pack booster boxes. Sealed product options: Tech Sticker Collections (3 packs), Standard ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. (9 packs), PC · Pokemon CenterThe Pokemon Company's official store. Its exclusive products often add packs or a stamped promo. ETB (9 packs), Premium Poster Collection (10 packs), and Booster Bundles (6 packs).
  • The most expensive cards (April 2026): Mega Gengar ex SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards., then Pikachu ex SIR, Mega Dragonite ex SIR, Mega Charizard Y ex MHR · Mega Hyper RareThe gold card in English Mega Evolution sets, usually the rarest card in the set., and the Pikachu ex SIR Tera variant. The SIRs have outperformed the MHRs over the first quarter of trading.
  • God Packs are confirmed, containing 3 Mega Attack Rares and 7 SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards.. Sealed product prices stayed stubborn partly because of God Pack lottery appeal.
  • The Ultra Rare pull rate dropped notably compared with previous sets. This makes Full Art Trainers and similar cards harder to pull, which shows up in slightly higher UR singles prices.
  • With 22 SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. competing for the same pull rate slots, the odds of pulling any specific chase card are long. Even at the improved SIR rate, supply can't meet demand for the top cards, which is keeping singles prices elevated.
  • Mega Dragonite ex is the cover star. Dragonite collectors are dedicated holders, and the SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. has climbed while the MHR · Mega Hyper RareThe gold card in English Mega Evolution sets, usually the rarest card in the set. version corrected. Unusually, the MHR is less than half the SIR price. Collectors clearly prefer the SIR artwork over the gold variant.

Watch out for

  • There are NO booster boxes for this set. Ascended Heroes is a special expansion like 151 or Prismatic Evolutions. If someone is selling you a 'booster box,' they're either confused or scamming you.
  • Tech Sticker Collections still have terrible per-pack value for ripping. They exist for the exclusive Charmander/Gastly promos. Buy one for your collection, then stop.
  • A complete Grand Master set (all reverse variants) physically requires two binders or 12-pocket pages. Energy pattern reverses, Ball-type pattern reverses, and Team Rocket stamp variants where applicable. Plan your storage before committing to this path.
  • The Team Rocket stamp and Ball-type pattern reverses are different things on different cards. Not every card has a Rocket variant. Check which cards actually get the stamp before buying or you'll overpay for something that doesn't exist.
  • Pulling that specific Mega Gengar ex SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. you want is a long shot based on TCGPlayer data, with 22 SIRs sharing the SIR slot. Expected pack spending to hit it runs several times the single's price. Buy the single instead. Still a far better deal.
  • Your old Mega Evolution cards from the XY era (2014-2016) do NOT work with these new cards. The new cards are 'Mega Evolution Pokémon ex' with significantly higher HP and damage to match current power creep. Old cards are Expanded format only.
  • PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 10 premiums on the top chase cards are already significant. But centering on this print run has been inconsistent, so inspect cards carefully before submitting for grading. A PSA 9 on a top chase card is still a loss relative to grading costs.
  • God Pack claims on eBay and social media are rampant. Many are fake or resealed. If buying a 'God Pack' as sealed, only do so from verified sellers with established reputations and buyer protection.

Mega Evolution Ascended Heroes grading guide

Which Mega Evolution Ascended Heroes cards are worth the $20+/card grading fee? PSA 10 premiums vary significantly by rarity tier. See our complete grading guide for how grading works, costs, and international submission options.

Tier 1 - Mandatory Grading

Worth grading
Mega Gengar ex SIR (284/217), Pikachu ex SIR (276/217), Mega Dragonite ex SIR (290/217), Mega Charizard Y ex MHR (294/217)
PSA 10: $1,200-2,000Raw: $445-1,145Premium: 1.7x-2x

The big four chase cards. Mega Gengar SIR leads at ~$1,145, followed by the two Pikachu/Dragonite SIRs above $680, then the Charizard Y MHR. Only submit with 60/40+ centering, because this print run has inconsistent centering. PSA 10 slabs command strong premiums across all four.

Tier 2 - Recommended Grading

Worth grading
Pikachu ex SIR Tera (277/217), Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex SIR (281/217), Mega Dragonite ex MHR (295/217), Mega Diancie MAR, Mega Charizard X MAR, Mega Lucario MAR
PSA 10: $500-800Raw: $285-341Premium: 1.8x-2x

Mid-tier chase cards with strong collector demand. The Mega Attack Rares are the first cards with this rarity tier, and novelty drives grading interest. Mega Dragonite MHR at $285 is notably cheaper than its SIR sibling, which is unusual pricing worth noting. Grade pristine copies only.

Tier 3 - Selective Grading

Worth grading
Lillie's Clefairy ex SIR, Mega Feraligatr ex SIR, N's Zoroark ex SIR, Other SIRs, Full Art Trainers
PSA 10: $250-400Raw: $145-170Premium: 1.5x-2x

Grade only if perfectly centered and you're holding long-term. Lillie's Clefairy has come off its early highs to ~$170, Mega Feraligatr ~$162, N's Zoroark ~$145. PSA 10 premium still justifies submission on clean copies.

Tier 4 - Not Worth Grading

Skip grading
Regular holos, Reverse holos, Illustration Rares under $30, Common/Uncommon cards
PSA 10: $15-40Raw: $2-25Premium: 2x-3x

Grading costs ($20-75) eat into the value premium. Keep these raw unless you're building a complete PSA 10 master set for personal satisfaction.

Before you submit — PSA checklist, fees, and tips▾

PSA 10 requirements

Centering
55/45 minimum front and back. Modern SIRs frequently fail here — pre-screen every candidate.
Corners
Sharp, no whitening under magnification. Sleeve the moment you pull the card.
Surface
No scratches, print lines, or holo damage. SIR foils are especially vulnerable from the factory.
Edges
No chipping or fraying. Inspect under bright light.

PSA service tiers

Value
$20/card, 4–6 month turnaround. Right for raw values $75–500.
Regular
$50/card, 6–8 week turnaround. Right for raw values $500+.
Express
$75–150/card, 2–3 week turnaround. Only worth it above $1,000 raw.

Budget for a 5-card submission: $135–170 once you add shipping, insurance, and supplies.

Tips from experienced submitters

  • • Pre-screen with a loupe — 70%+ of modern cards fail centering.
  • • PSA Collectors Club ($99/year) pays for itself with 2–3 value-tier submissions.
  • • Ship in batches of 10+ to amortize shipping and insurance.
  • • PSA 9 typically sells at 40–60% of PSA 10 — still a premium over raw.

Storage & protection

Protect your 333-card Mega Evolution Ascended Heroes master set with archival binders, perfect-fit sleeves, and top loaders for the chase cards. Plan on $150–250 for complete coverage.

Premium binders

Dragon Shield Codex · $30–50

Archival pages, side-loading pockets, acid-free. For 333 cards, plan on 19 double-sided 9-pocket pages.

Perfect-fit sleeves

Every card · $30–50 total

Prevent micro-scratches from sliding cards in and out of binder pockets. You'll need roughly 4 packs for full coverage.

Top loaders

Chase cards · $15–25/pack

Rigid protection for SIRs and grading candidates. Essential for anything over $50 raw.

Why can't I find a Booster Box for Ascended Heroes?▾

Ascended Heroes is a special expansion, not a main set. Special expansions like 151 and Prismatic Evolutions don't get booster boxes. The Booster Bundle (6 packs) is the best value sealed product.

Can I use my old Mega Evolution cards from 2014-2016?▾

No. The new cards are 'Mega Evolution Pokémon ex' with much higher HP and damage numbers to match 2026 power creep. Your XY-era Mega cards are completely different and only legal in Expanded format. These are new cards that use the same mechanic name.

What are the pull rates for Ascended Heroes?▾

Based on TCGPlayer's 2,000+ pack study, Double Rares are the most common hit, followed by Illustration Rares, then Ultra Rares and Mega Attack Rares at a clear step down in frequency. Special Illustration Rares are genuine long odds, and Mega Hyper Rares are rarer by another order of magnitude. God Packs are rarer than everything else and were excluded from those numbers.

See also: Pack opening strategy

What exactly is a God Pack?▾

A God Pack replaces the bulk card slots with high-rarity cards. In Ascended Heroes, that's 3 Mega Attack Rares and 7 Special Illustration Rares. The odds are extremely long. If you open one, sleeve the entire pack immediately.

Does every card have a Team Rocket stamp variant?▾

No. The Team Rocket 'R' stamp only appears on villain-themed cards like Team Rocket's Dugtrio. Most cards get a Ball-type foil pattern (Poké Ball, Love Ball, Friend Ball, Quick Ball, or Dusk Ball) for their second reverse variant. Check the Cardrake database before buying to avoid overpaying for variants that don't exist.
