About Cardrake: Born from Collector Frustration

The story of how one collector's organizational nightmare became the solution thousands of Pokemon TCG enthusiasts rely on.

The Problem That Started Everything

Cardrake exists because I got tired of reorganizing my binders every few months. Like many collectors, I thought I had a good system—until I didn't. The breaking point came in 2023 when I decided to build my Pokemon 151 Master Set. Here was this nostalgic, special expansion featuring all the original Kanto Pokemon, and I wanted to organize it perfectly.

But as I started pulling cards and planning my binder layout, I realized I had no idea where each card would actually go. Which page would Charizard land on? How would the special illustration cards fit with the regular ones? I was essentially flying blind, knowing I'd probably end up reorganizing everything once I saw how it actually looked.

As a software developer and lifelong Pokemon collector, I kept thinking: “There has to be a better way to plan this stuff before committing cards to pages.” But when I searched for tools to help visualize binder layouts, I found nothing. Plenty of collection trackers existed, but none showed you exactly where each card would sit in your actual binder.

Building the Solution We All Needed

I started building Cardrake in 2023 as a personal tool for my Pokemon 151 Master Set. The core insight was simple: collectors need to see their complete binder layout before they start organizing physically. Not just a list of cards, but the actual visual layout—page by page, slot by slot, exactly as it would appear in a real binder.

The first version was crude but immediately transformative. I could plan my Pokemon 151 layout, see exactly where each Kanto Pokemon would sit, account for special illustrations in separate slots, and know precisely which cards would fit on each page. When I finally organized the physical binder, every card had a predetermined home. No surprises, no reorganization needed.

This saved me countless hours. Every time I pulled a new card, I knew exactly which page and slot it belonged to. No more flipping through the binder wondering where things should go, no more discovering I'd organized things wrong after the fact. It was the tool I wished had existed when I started collecting seriously.
