The storyThe one and only Gold Star Charizard
Charizard drives more of the Pokemon TCG market than any other Pokemon, and the Gold Star era produced exactly one English Charizard Gold Star. That scarcity does most of the work here. There is no second option, no cheaper alternate, just this card from EX Dragon Frontiers in 2006.
“The only Gold Star Charizard printed in English”
Dragon Frontiers was a Delta Species set, which means many of its Pokemon carried unusual typings and the small delta symbol on the card. This Charizard kept its Fire typing but wears the delta mark, and the Gold Star treatment paints it in shiny coloring rather than the usual orange.
It slots neatly into a Charizard run. Base Set is the origin, the modern Scarlet and Violet cards are the current chase, and the Gold Star is the vintage piece in between that most serious Charizard collectors eventually want.
By the numbersMarket analysis
One of the most valuable EX-era Gold Stars, lifted by Charizard demand on top of Gold Star scarcity. Raw copies sit in the four figures and clean graded examples climb well beyond that. The Charizard name adds a premium that other Gold Stars do not get.
Appreciated strongly through the vintage boom and held up better than most because Charizard demand never really cools. Supply is fixed at the 2006 print run, so the long-term direction follows Charizard collecting more than anything else.
About as durable as vintage gets, because it combines the rarest EX-era card type with the most bankable Pokemon. The constraints are price and condition, this is a high entry point and clean copies are scarce. Graded examples are the steadier hold.
Steep. High-grade copies command a large premium over raw, and gem-mint examples are genuinely rare for a textured holo card from 2006. Surface scratching and centering are the common grade killers.
EX-era Gold Stars pulled at roughly 1 per two booster boxes, around 1 in 72 packs, and Dragon Frontiers followed that pattern. With only a few Gold Stars in the set, landing the Charizard specifically was a long shot.
Shares the standard EX Gold Star pull rate, but Charizard demand sets it apart from the rest of the run on price. It sits below the league-only POP 5 Eeveelutions in raw scarcity, yet often matches or beats them on value thanks to the Charizard name.
ArtworkWhy the art matters

Fukuda illustrated most of the Gold Star line, and his Charizard fits the run, a single dramatic pose rather than a busy scene. He has drawn Charizard across multiple eras, which gives this card extra weight with collectors who follow his work.
A shiny Charizard mid-roar, wings spread, rendered in the alternate coloring that Gold Stars use instead of the standard orange. The illustration breaks the inner frame in the Gold Star style so the Pokemon pushes past its border.
Rare Holo Gold Star printing with the gold star next to the name, the delta symbol on the card, and the textured holofoil of the era. The shiny palette and the frame-breaking art mark it apart from the regular Dragon Frontiers Charizard.
It is the only Gold Star Charizard, full stop. For the most collected Pokemon in the hobby, that uniqueness is the whole appeal.

The Dragon Frontiers card had playable Fire-type stats in its day, but today it is purely a collector and display piece.

Textured holo cards from 2006 scratch easily, so surface wear is the main issue, along with edge whitening and centering drift. Clean copies are scarce and the price reflects it.
Grade clean copies without hesitation. The high-grade premium is large and a slab handles authentication on a frequently faked card. PSA leads for vintage Charizard comps, with CGC and BGS as alternatives. Read the grading guide →
Penny sleeve plus a rigid holder for raw copies, a graded slab for any long-term hold. Keep it out of direct light and away from humidity swings, the textured holo is sensitive. See the storage guide →
Buy graded. The combination of high value, heavy faking, and condition sensitivity makes raw copies risky for most buyers. eBay has the deepest graded market, and sold comps are the honest price guide. See the singles buying guide →
Charizard Gold Stars are a top counterfeit target because of the value. Use the light test (genuine cards have a black core layer that blocks light), check the textured holo and print sharpness, and compare the back's blue swirl gradient to a known copy. For real money, buy a graded slab from PSA, CGC, or BGS.

Regarded as a grail. Charizard collectors treat it as a must-have vintage piece, and its one-of-a-kind status keeps it permanently in demand.
- ›Gem-mint graded copies have sold in the five figures at major auction houses
- ›Tracks Charizard demand closely, holding value through market dips better than most vintage cards
A regular in 'grail Charizard' and 'best Gold Star' content. Any Charizard collection tour that reaches the vintage shelf features it, and pulls from sealed Dragon Frontiers product still make the rounds.
