Holofoil 161/131 · $1323.45 — the only variant this card was printed in (no reverse holo or special pattern), so a master set needs just this one copy.

Prismatic Evolutions dropped in January 2025 as the Eeveelution celebration set. It featured all eight evolved forms of Eevee with premium artwork. Nobody was surprised when Umbreon ex became the chase. Moonbreon from Evolving Skies established Umbreon as the most sought-after Eeveelution in modern collecting. This card continues that pattern with artwork that puts Umbreon in a different kind of scene.

The storyThe Prismatic Evolutions Crown Jewel

Prismatic Evolutions exists because collectors love Eeveelutions. The set gave each of Eevee's eight evolutions the Special Illustration Rare treatment. Beautiful cards across the board. But collectors don't treat them equally.

“The most valuable card in Prismatic Evolutions by a wide margin”

Umbreon sits at the top by a significant margin. The Dark-type fox consistently outprices its siblings across every set where they appear together. Evolving Skies proved it. Prismatic Evolutions confirms it. When you put all eight Eeveelutions in a set, Umbreon is the one everyone wants most.

The gap in price between this Umbreon and the other Prismatic Evolutions SIRs tells the story. Same pull rates. Same production quality. Different demand levels. Umbreon has something the others don't, and the market reflects that.

By the numbersMarket analysis

Price context

The clear chase of Prismatic Evolutions. Other Eeveelution SIRs in the set sell for a fraction of the Umbreon price. The gap mirrors what happened in Evolving Skies with Moonbreon versus the other alternate art VMAXs.

Price trend

Release demand was intense. Scalper activity pushed prices high initially. The typical post-release correction happened but Umbreon maintained its position at the top. Long-term trajectory depends on print run size and whether The Pokemon Company keeps reprinting the set.

Investment outlook

Umbreon's collector appeal is proven over multiple sets and years. The question is supply. If Prismatic Evolutions gets reprinted heavily, prices adjust. If print runs stay limited, the card holds. Either way, Umbreon cards tend to recover better than others after corrections.

Demand drivers
Umbreon's established status as the favourite Eeveelution among collectorsHigh quality Special Illustration Rare artworkPrismatic Evolutions as a collector-focused set drew attentionLimited early supply combined with massive demandPattern recognition from Moonbreon's success in Evolving Skies
Graded premium

PSA 10 and CGC 10 copies command strong premiums. Modern card quality is generally good but check centering. The SIR texture can show print inconsistencies.

Approx. pull rate

Prismatic Evolutions SIRs have very low pull rates. Expect roughly 1 SIR per 2-3 booster boxes on average, with no guarantee of pulling the Umbreon specifically.

Rarity context

Same rarity tier as other Prismatic Evolutions SIRs. All have similar pull rates. The price difference comes entirely from demand, not mathematical rarity.

ArtworkWhy the art matters

Card artwork
Artist · Sanosuke Sakuma

Sanosuke Sakuma has created several notable Pokemon illustrations. The work tends toward atmospheric scenes that tell stories beyond just showing the Pokemon in action.

The artwork

The artwork places Umbreon in an urban night setting. City lights provide background illumination while Umbreon's yellow rings glow against the darkness. The composition creates mood rather than focusing on action or battle.

Technical details

Special Illustration Rare treatment means textured holofoil across the full card face. The foil catches light and shifts as you move the card. The dark colour palette makes the luminous elements stand out more.

What makes it special

Night scenes suit Umbreon's nature as a Dark-type Pokemon. The artwork plays to that identity. Umbreon evolves at night through friendship. Showing it in a nocturnal urban environment connects to that origin.

BackgroundAbout Umbreon ex

Umbreon appeared in Generation II with Pokemon Gold and Silver in 1999. It evolves from Eevee when leveled up with high friendship at night. The mechanic was new at the time since Gold and Silver introduced the day/night cycle. Umbreon represented the Dark type, which was also new in Gen II.

Why fans love it
  • ›Sleek black and yellow design appeals across age groups
  • ›Dark-type aesthetic attracts fans who prefer edgier Pokemon
  • ›Part of the beloved Eeveelution family
  • ›Starter in Pokemon Colosseum gave it a hero role
  • ›Strong competitive presence in main series games
Notable appearances
  • ›Starter Pokemon in Pokemon Colosseum (GameCube, 2003)
  • ›Gary Oak's partner in the original anime
  • ›Regular feature in Pokemon GO community events
  • ›Competitive staple in VGC formats
Competitive relevance

Umbreon functions as a defensive tank with Foul Play as its main damage option. It sees play in formats where its bulk matters. The ex version has decent stats for competitive but most collectors protect the SIR.

Condition notes

Check centering on both front and back. The textured surface can show print lines or surface imperfections. Edge whitening is possible from rough pack handling.

Grading recommendation

Given the value, grading makes sense for clean copies. Verify centering meets standards before submitting. PSA, CGC, and BGS all work. Consider turnaround times versus value appreciation. Read the grading guide →

Storage advice

Sleeve immediately in a perfect fit inner sleeve. Place in a rigid top loader or magnetic one-touch case. For long-term storage, graded slabs provide the best protection. Keep away from direct light and humidity. See the storage guide →

Buying advice

TCGPlayer and eBay have the most listings. eBay auctions can run hot during hype periods. Check recent sold prices, not just current listings. Seller reputation matters more as prices increase. See the singles buying guide →

Authentication tips

High prices attract counterfeits. Authentic cards have the correct texture pattern and cardstock weight. The holofoil should shift smoothly with light. When spending significant amounts, buy graded from reputable sellers.

Word on the streetCommunity sentiment

Reception

The collector community expected Umbreon to top the set. It did. No surprises there. Discussion focuses more on whether prices will stabilize and what print run sizes mean for long-term value.

Notable sales
  • ›Early sales saw significant variance as supply was limited
  • ›PSA 10 copies consistently fetch strong premiums at auction
Social buzz

Reddit and YouTube gave Prismatic Evolutions heavy coverage. Umbreon pulls generate engagement. Comparisons to Moonbreon are constant. The pattern of Umbreon dominance across Eeveelution sets is now established.

Good to knowFrequently asked questions

Umbreon consistently tops Eeveelution sets in collector demand. Moonbreon from Evolving Skies established the pattern. Same pull rates, different desirability. The market values Umbreon above its siblings.
Both are Umbreon cards with premium artwork from Eeveelution-focused sets. Moonbreon is the VMAX alternate art from Evolving Skies (2021). This is the Special Illustration Rare from Prismatic Evolutions (2025). Different cards, same pattern of Umbreon dominance.
If the card looks clean with good centering, yes. The value justifies grading costs. Check centering carefully before submitting. PSA 10 and CGC 10 copies sell for meaningful premiums over raw.
The Pokemon Company has not announced reprint plans. High-demand sets often get additional print runs. If reprints happen, supply increases and prices typically adjust. The uncertainty is part of the market dynamics.
