The storyThe Shiny Vault Charizard that made Hidden Fates a hit
Hidden Fates landed in August 2019 as a special set, and the Shiny Vault subset was the reason most people opened it. SV49 is the shiny full-art Charizard GX, and it sits at the top of the whole thing. The artwork reuses the pose from the original Burning Shadows Charizard GX, recolored into Charizard's shiny black scheme and given the embossed Shiny Vault holofoil treatment.
“Shiny full-art Charizard GX, the top chase of the Hidden Fates Shiny Vault”
Charizard, shiny, and full art together make about as direct a collector magnet as the hobby produces. That combination is why this card carried demand from day one and why it still anchors the set. Hidden Fates packs were never sold loose from booster boxes either, so the supply path always ran through sealed product. That kept pressure on the singles.
For master set builders, SV49 is the headline pull of the Shiny Vault and usually the single most expensive card you will chase to finish the subset.
By the numbersMarket analysis
SV49 sits at the top of the Hidden Fates Shiny Vault and is the most valuable single in the subset. A clean raw copy trades in strong three-figure territory, and high grades push well past that. Among modern Charizards it is one of the more recognized and liquid cards, so it moves often and prices are easy to read.
Prices climbed hard during the 2020 to 2021 collecting surge, then cooled off the peak like most modern Charizards. It has settled into a stable band since, with graded gem copies holding a clear premium. This is a card with deep, consistent demand rather than a speculative spike, so it tends to hold value better than thinner chase cards.
As a Charizard with a recognizable look and steady demand, SV49 is one of the safer modern Charizards to hold. It is not rare in absolute terms, so do not expect a vintage-style runup. The realistic case is slow, stable appreciation on a graded copy. Buy the best condition you can afford and treat it as a long hold.
Gem-mint copies command a real step up over raw, and the jump from PSA 9 to PSA 10 is meaningful given how many were graded. Centering and edge whitening are the usual things that keep these cards out of the 10 grade, so a verified high grade carries a deserved premium.
Hidden Fates did not sell loose booster packs from boxes the way standard sets do, so the pull odds are tied to sealed Elite Trainer Boxes and tins rather than a clean per-pack figure. Within the Shiny Vault, the full-art GX cards like SV49 are the rarest pull tier and turn up far less often than the more common shiny basics. In practice you are much more likely to complete the rest of the Shiny Vault than to pull this Charizard, which is exactly why it carries the price it does. Most builders buy SV49 as a single rather than chase it from product.
Compared to the standard shiny Pokemon in the Shiny Vault, which turn up far more often, the shiny full-art GX cards are the genuine chase tier. SV49 is the most sought after of that group, alongside the shiny Umbreon GX and Sylveon GX.
ArtworkWhy the art matters

5ban Graphics is the studio behind a large share of the Pokemon TCG's full-art and ultra-rare cards from the XY and Sun & Moon eras. Rather than a single illustrator, it is a graphics house known for the polished, high-gloss full-art GX layouts that defined this period of the game. Their work shows up across many of the most collected modern chase cards.
Charizard rears up mid-roar against a full-bleed flame background, the same composition used on the original Burning Shadows print. Here it is recolored into Charizard's shiny form, the body shifted to black with the belly and wing membranes in lighter tones. The Shiny Vault treatment adds a heavy embossed holofoil texture across the card face that catches light differently from a standard full art.
Full-art GX card with the Shiny Vault embossed holofoil finish, which gives the surface a textured, sparkling sheen rather than a flat holo. The card is numbered SV49 in the SV1 through SV94 Shiny Vault run. It is a Stage 2 Fire-type GX with 250 HP and the Crimson Storm attack.
It takes the most popular Charizard full-art pose of its era and gives it the shiny recolor plus the premium embossed foil. You get the familiar layout collectors already loved, in a form that only exists in this one set.
BackgroundAbout Charizard GX
Charizard has been the face of Pokemon card collecting since the 1999 Base Set, and that pull has never faded. Nearly every set that features a Charizard sees it become the chase card, and the value gap between a Charizard and the rest of a set is usually wide. The Hidden Fates SV49 is a clean example of that pattern in the Sun & Moon era.
- ›Charizard's status as the most collected Pokemon in the game
- ›The shiny black recolor that distinguishes it from every other Charizard GX
- ›Full-art GX format with the standout embossed Shiny Vault foil
- ›Tied to a well-known, beginner-friendly set
- ›Strong nostalgia for the Sun & Moon GX era
- ›Headline card of the 2019 Hidden Fates Shiny Vault subset
- ›Shiny recolor of the original Charizard GX from Burning Shadows (2017)
GX cards have long since rotated out of Standard play, so SV49's relevance today is entirely as a collector and display piece. In its time the base Charizard GX was a playable Stage 2 attacker, but the Shiny Vault version was always pulled and kept for the collection rather than the deck.

Full-art cards show edge whitening fast because of the dark borders, and the textured foil can hold surface scratches. Check the corners and the left and right edges under good light. Centering varies on these full arts, so compare the border thickness top to bottom and side to side before paying a premium.
Worth grading if you have a clean raw copy, since the graded premium is real and the card is liquid in slabs. PSA is the default for resale on this card given how many comparable sales exist. Only grade copies you genuinely believe can hit a 9 or 10. The dark borders make whitening obvious and cap the grade quickly. Read the grading guide →
Keep raw copies in a penny sleeve inside a top loader or one-touch, out of direct light. The embossed foil and dark borders both punish careless handling. For long-term storage, a graded slab is the safest home for a card at this value. See the storage guide →
For any serious money, buy graded from a reputable seller so you are protected on authenticity. Charizard is among the most counterfeited Pokemon, so be wary of cheap raw copies that look too clean. If buying raw, ask for sharp photos of all four corners and both edges, and confirm the embossed texture is present. Cross-check recent sold comps before paying. See the singles buying guide →
Confirm the embossed Shiny Vault foil texture, which fakes often miss or render flat. Do a light test along the edge to check for the black core layer inside a genuine card. Inspect the back swirl and color gradient against a card you know is real, check the front surface texture and holo behavior, and verify the SV49 number and font. When in doubt on a card at this price, buy it already graded.

Collectors have liked this card since launch. It is consistently named one of the top Shiny Vault chase cards alongside the shiny Umbreon GX and Sylveon GX, and it is the one most people picture when Hidden Fates comes up. The shiny black Charizard look is widely considered one of the cleaner shiny GX treatments of the era.
- ›High-grade gem copies have sold for strong multiples of raw market value at PSA 10 and equivalent BGS and CGC grades
Hidden Fates stayed in conversation because of its reprint-heavy, beginner-friendly Shiny Vault, and SV49 is the card most often pulled as the headline of any Hidden Fates opening video or pack break. It remains a common target for collectors completing modern Charizard runs.
