Acquisition Strategy

  • • Monitor price trends - chase cards often fluctuate based on tournament results and influencer coverage
  • • Consider condition flexibility - a LP/MP copy can save 30-50% on vintage cards
  • • Check multiple marketplaces - prices vary significantly between TCGPlayer, eBay, and local stores
  • • Buy during market dips - major releases and reprints often cause temporary price drops

About this set

Silver Tempest is the last standard Sword & Shield booster box. That's not a throwaway detail. Crown Zenith followed two months later in January 2023 without a booster box, and no subsequent SWSH product had one. Collectors who want a sealed SWSH booster box have exactly one option: this set. The Trainer Gallery subset (TG01-TG30) was new to Silver Tempest. The 30 full-art cards pairing Pokemon with their Trainers felt more like illustrations than typical card art. Serena, Cynthia's Feelings, and Irida are among the more visually interesting Trainer cards in the whole Sword & Shield era, and the Gallery generated more collector enthusiasm than any comparable insert from other SWSH sets. Lugia VSTAR as the top chase card has multi-generational reach. Generation 2 players remember Lugia from Gold and Silver, from the 2000 movie, from Base Set 2. A full-art VSTAR version is the kind of card that gets collectors who haven't actively played the TCG since 2000 paying attention again. Regidrago and Regieleki as paired legendary VSTARs gave competitive players a reason to care beyond pure collection. And 225 cards total (195 main + 30 Gallery) is a scope that feels achievable without being trivial.

Where Silver Tempest fits in the era

Silver Tempest released November 11, 2022 as the twelfth main Sword & Shield expansion, pulling from Japan's Paradigm Trigger (October 2022). It arrived during the post-2021 cooldown, after the pandemic-era speculation boom had moderated, which meant initial pricing was more rational than the 2021 heights. Steady demand came from Lugia VSTAR and the Trainer Gallery subset rather than speculation. The Trainer Gallery format introduced here carried directly into Crown Zenith's Galarian Gallery two months later, making Silver Tempest the first implementation of the gallery concept that defined late SWSH collecting. Lugia VSTAR was the first VSTAR version of the Generation 2 legendary. The VSTAR mechanic had launched with Brilliant Stars in February 2022, and Lugia was the card people had been waiting to see in that format. Crown Zenith arrived in January 2023 without a booster box, which at the time was mainly a curiosity but became more significant over time as collectors realized Silver Tempest was the last standard SWSH booster box. By 2025, that distinction has been one of the two main drivers of sealed product appreciation, alongside standard out-of-print scarcity.

Collecting challenges

The main challenge with Silver Tempest is simple: MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more. is gone. Sealed product is out of print. Booster boxes and ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. now trade at secondary market premiums, and those are the only prices available. The singles route for a full master set (195 main cards, 30 Trainer Gallery cards, 195 reverse holofoils) costs meaningfully less than the sealed route, which carries variance on top. The Trainer Gallery adds a meaningful chunk to the budget depending on how many high-value TG cards you need, and it requires separate sourcing since TG cards pull on their own distribution rather than main set slots. Don't assume box opening covers both. SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. pull rates are roughly 1 specific SIR per 72 packs, which means Lugia VSTAR SIR and Alolan Vulpix V SIR should both be bought directly. Buying 3 boxes to chase Lugia VSTAR gets you roughly 50% statistical odds and costs several times what the single sells for. Counterfeit verification is more important here than on newer in-print sets. Older out-of-print cards at premium prices attract more sophisticated fakes. Verify holo texture, UV pattern, and QR code on any Lugia VSTAR SIR purchase from a private seller.

Where to buy

TCGPlayer

both

Pricing: Market · Reliability: high

Best for: Singles purchasing, best transparent pricing on SIRs and Trainer Gallery cards

Use TCGPlayer Direct for verified condition on Lugia VSTAR SIR and other high-value cards. Filter NM condition. Trainer Gallery bulk sellers sometimes list sets of 10-15 TG commons at discount versus individual singles. Search for lots.

Shop Sword & Shield Silver Tempest singles on TCGPlayer →

eBay

both

Pricing: Market · Reliability: varies

Best for: Sealed booster boxes and graded Lugia VSTAR SIR copies

Filter Top Rated Sellers for any purchase above $50. Verify authentication on Lugia VSTAR SIR. Counterfeits exist at this price point. Auctions sometimes clear 10-20% below BIN on sealed boxes, worth watching for booster box purchases.

Local Game Stores

both

Pricing: Market · Reliability: high

Best for: Sealed booster boxes at secondary market pricing with physical inspection

LGS stores that bought inventory at release may still have stock at reasonable prices. Ask about trade-in credit for duplicate cards, often 10-20% above cash value. Physical inspection of sealed booster boxes helps verify condition before purchase.

r/pkmntcgtrades

both

Pricing: Below Market · Reliability: varies

Best for: Trainer Gallery bulk lots and mid-tier SIR singles at 10-15% below market

Trainer Gallery completion traders are active here. Collectors who completed TG sets often sell duplicates in lots. Check flair and trade history. PayPal G&S for any transaction above $20. Good for saving $50-100 on TG bulk acquisition.

Pokemon Center

sealed

Pricing: MSRP · Reliability: medium

Best for: Restocks at MSRP if they occur, unlikely but worth monitoring

Pokemon Center occasionally runs limited restocks on older sets. At $50 MSRP for ETBs versus $60-90 secondary market, any restock creates meaningful savings. Set up restock alerts. Don't count on it as a purchasing strategy.

Japanese import (Buyee / Mercari JP)

singles

Pricing: Below Market · Reliability: high

Best for: Paradigm Trigger SIR and TG equivalents at 20-30% savings on non-top-chase cards

Japanese Paradigm Trigger is the counterpart. English commands 25-35% premium on SIRs. Savings offset shipping on $60+ orders. Lugia VSTAR SIR price gap is smaller than most SIRs due to JP collector demand, but mid-tier SIRs save meaningfully.

When to buy

Months 2–4

Months 4–12

Bulk dips 15–20% on reprint news. Chase cards stay steady.

Year 2+
Long term

Collecting strategy

Most cards in this set are worth around $0.34 as singles. Opening packs is the fun way to build your base of commons and uncommons with a chance at lucky pulls — but chase cards are statistically unlikely from sealed product. For most master set collectors, the smart approach is packs for bulk, singles for the rest.

Estimated Cost

Timeframe

Mix of singles and strategic pack opening

1Buy singles for cards over $5
2Open booster boxes for bulk acquisition
3Target NM condition for valuable cards
4Include key reverse holofoils
5Use multiple marketplaces for best prices
The route for this set

Open 2-3 booster boxes for bulk acquisition, opening experience, and Trainer Gallery variety. This reaches approximately 45-60% completion. Buy all SIRs as singles including Lugia VSTAR first. Complete Trainer Gallery as a second phase buying high-value TG cards individually. Grade Lugia VSTAR SIR if pulled with clean 60/40+ centering. Budget for the cards and treat storage as its own line item on top.

Community insights

From collector discussions, forums, and social media.

What collectors are saying

  • Silver Tempest released November 11, 2022 as the twelfth main Sword & Shield expansion. The Trainer Gallery subset (TG01-TG30) was new to this set: 30 full-art cards pairing Pokemon with their Trainers, and it became the part of the set people actually talked about most.
  • Lugia VSTAR dominated chase discussion from pre-release. First Lugia VSTAR card, iconic Generation 2 legendary, clearly the set's top-end card. Reddit and YouTube pull videos ran hot throughout late 2022 with people hunting it.
  • There were stretches in 2022 where Trainer Gallery cards like Serena, Cynthia's Feelings, and Irida got more attention than the main set SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards.. The TG cards commanded prices well above what a typical reverse holofoil would fetch.
  • Community was split on the set's value proposition in 2022. Some called it the best non-special Sword & Shield set specifically because of the Trainer Gallery. Others pointed out Lugia VSTAR's price made pack hunting genuinely reckless math.
  • Regidrago VSTAR and Regieleki VSTAR pulled in competitive players who wouldn't normally chase a standard release. Paired legendary VSTARs as potential tournament archetypes created cross-market demand that kept prices firmer than pure collector sets.
  • By 2025, Silver Tempest is widely viewed as a SWSH-era sleeper. Sealed product never dropped to MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more. on the secondary market, the Trainer Gallery held value better than most SWSH sets, and Lugia VSTAR's appreciation tracked above-average.
  • Unown V SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. got outsized attention relative to its competitive irrelevance. Full-art Unown is exactly the kind of collector novelty that resonates with nostalgia regardless of tournament play, and the price reflects that.
  • Silver Tempest is the last standard SWSH booster box. Crown Zenith came two months later in January 2023 but never had a booster box. Collectors who specifically want a SWSH booster box end up here.
  • The main set plus 30 Trainer Gallery cards is a scope collectors consistently describe as manageable. Large enough to feel like a real project, not so large that it's paralyzing.

Tips from the community

  • Buy Lugia VSTAR SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. (#196/195) first. It sits above the main set number, pulls at standard SIR rates, and you will never pull it efficiently from boxes. Just buy it directly.
  • Trainer Gallery cards (TG01-TG30) pull on a separate distribution from main set cards. Opening boxes does not systematically complete the Gallery alongside the main set. Track it separately from the start.
  • Alolan Vulpix V SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. and Serena SIR are the most expensive entries in the set's non-Lugia tier. Buy as singles. They appear infrequently enough in packs that hunting them is not cost-effective.
  • Booster boxes on the secondary market still trade near or below original MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more.. This is the last main-series SWSH booster box. Crown Zenith had none. Some buyers pay a premium specifically for that distinction. Factor in whether you're buying to open or to hold before committing.
  • Complete the main set first before addressing the Trainer Gallery. The Gallery is a meaningful expense as its own phase, and tackling it separately keeps the project feel manageable rather than overwhelming.
  • Regidrago VSTAR and Regieleki VSTAR have both collector and retrospective competitive demand. Buy these before SWSH nostalgia cycles push pricing, which happens periodically when Sword & Shield formats get attention.
  • Silver Tempest has 8-10 SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. in the pool. Opening 3-4 booster boxes will get you bulk commons and Trainer Gallery variety but you'll still need most SIRs as singles. Don't open boxes expecting SIR set completion.
  • The opportunity cost of holding sealed Silver Tempest increases over time as prices drift upward. If you bought boxes to open, open them now rather than waiting for a 'better time' that may cost more to replicate later.
  • For Trainer Gallery fills, find TCGPlayer sellers listing TG card lots. Collectors who finish the Gallery often sell duplicate commons as cheap bundles, which beats picking individual singles one at a time.
  • Check Japanese Paradigm Trigger prices for Serena SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. and Cynthia's Feelings TG · Trainer GalleryA subset of full-art cards in late Sword & Shield sets, showing Pokemon with their Trainers. before buying English versions. Japanese runs 20-30% cheaper on most mid-tier SIRs and TG equivalents. The cards are identical apart from language.

Market insights

  • The 2025 chase-card hierarchy is clear: Lugia VSTAR SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. trades at roughly double the next card, followed by Alolan Vulpix V SIR and Serena SIR, then Regidrago VSTAR, Regieleki VSTAR, and Unown V SIRs
  • Trainer Gallery pricing is top-heavy: Serena TG leads, with Cynthia's Feelings TG and Irida TG close behind and common TG cards costing little. The full 30-card Gallery adds meaningfully to master set cost depending on how many high-value entries you need.
  • Booster boxes released in November 2022 now trade below original MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more. in nominal terms, which is unusual for out-of-print product. No new supply entering the market.
  • ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. now trade above their original MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more.. Out-of-print SWSH products tend to drift up over time rather than down, and ETBs are following that pattern.
  • Complete master set (195 main cards + 30 Trainer Gallery + 195 reverse holofoils) via singles costs noticeably less than the sealed product route, which doesn't guarantee Gallery completion anyway.
  • SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. pull rate is standard SWSH-era: roughly 1 per 72 packs for a specific card. A 36-pack booster box yields about 0.5 specific SIRs on average. Do not open boxes to chase individual SIRs.
  • Lugia VSTAR SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. has appreciated roughly 15-20% year-over-year since 2023. Generation 2 nostalgia and first-Lugia-VSTAR status provide a consistent appreciation floor that other SWSH SIRs don't have.
  • Japanese Paradigm Trigger is the counterpart. English commands 25-35% premium over Japanese on SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards., 15-25% on Trainer Gallery equivalents. Import logistics via Buyee add shipping costs but pay off on larger orders.
  • Sealed Silver Tempest benefits from two separate collector motivations: out-of-print scarcity and 'last standard SWSH booster box' status. Both support prices above what equivalent in-print product would command.
  • Graded Lugia VSTAR SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 10 copies trade at a 2.2x-2.6x multiple over raw. That's defensible grading economics for well-centered copies, but it's not an extraordinary premium.

Watch out for

  • MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more. is gone. Booster boxes trade near or below original retail and ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. above it on the secondary market. Budget at those prices, not at launch numbers.
  • Trainer Gallery cards do NOT pull from standard pack slots. Opening a booster box does not complete the main set and the Gallery at the same time. They require separate tracking and separate sourcing.
  • SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. pull rates are roughly 1 specific SIR per 72 packs. Buying 3 boxes to chase Lugia VSTAR SIR costs several times the card's single price for roughly 50% odds of pulling it.
  • The going booster box price reflects secondary market reality, not value relative to MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more.. For master set completion, singles-first is more efficient. For the opening experience, boxes are defensible but you're paying a premium for that experience.
  • Counterfeit risk on Lugia VSTAR SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. is real. Verify holo texture, UV pattern, and QR code before purchasing from private sellers. Buy from TCGPlayer Direct or sellers with verified grading history for any card of real value.
  • Don't mix up swsh12 (Silver Tempest) and swsh12pt5 (Crown Zenith) when buying. Different set symbols, different chase cards, different gallery structures (Trainer Gallery vs Galarian Gallery). Check the set symbol on every card before purchasing.
  • Regidrago VSTAR and Regieleki VSTAR prices are tied to retrospective format interest, not just collector demand. A format ruling or meta shift can move them 20-30%. They are not stable collector-only cards.
  • The Trainer Gallery adds real cost to the master set, and the headline main-set count causes collectors to miss this consistently. Budget for 225 cards (main + Gallery) from the start.
  • The 195 reverse holofoils are cheap individually but add meaningful money to total cost. This is almost always the line item that catches collectors off guard when they thought they were nearly done.
  • ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. have 9 packs versus 36 in a booster box, and the per-pack cost works out to more than double. If bulk card acquisition is your goal, booster boxes are clearly better value at current prices.

Sword & Shield Silver Tempest grading guide

Which Sword & Shield Silver Tempest cards are worth the $20+/card grading fee? PSA 10 premiums vary significantly by rarity tier. See our complete grading guide for how grading works, costs, and international submission options.

Tier 1 - Strong Grading Case

Worth grading
Lugia VSTAR SIR, Alolan Vulpix V SIR
PSA 10: $200-280Raw: $35-110Premium: 2.2x-2.6x

Lugia VSTAR SIR is the clear grading priority. PSA 10 copies trade at $200-280 versus $80-110 raw, a 2.2x-2.6x multiple. That covers grading costs with meaningful margin on well-centered copies. Alolan Vulpix V SIR has enough collector demand to sustain PSA 10 premiums. Pre-screen for 60/40+ centering. SWSH print quality is generally good but centering is inconsistent. PSA 10 rate estimated 20-30% for well-centered copies.

Tier 2 - Conditional Grading

Worth grading
Serena SIR, Regidrago VSTAR SIR, Serena TG, Cynthia's Feelings TG
PSA 10: $75-130Raw: $25-50Premium: 2.2x-2.8x

Serena SIR and TG both have Trainer card collector premiums. Grade only pristine 60/40+ centering copies with long-term holding intent. Grading costs $25-75 minimum per card, which only makes financial sense on copies you're confident are PSA 10 quality. Regidrago VSTAR has competitive nostalgia demand that supports the premium but is more volatile than pure collector cards.

Tier 3 - Not Recommended

Skip grading
Regieleki VSTAR SIR, Unown V SIR, Irida TG, Other TG cards $15-30
PSA 10: $50-85Raw: $15-35Premium: 2x-2.5x

PSA 10 premium theoretically 2x-2.5x but grading costs ($25-75) eat into profit margin significantly on $15-35 raw cards. Grade only if you have a pristine copy and plan to hold 3+ years. Personal collection value only.

Tier 4 - Do Not Grade

Skip grading
Main set V cards under $15, Reverse holofoils, Trainer Gallery commons under $10, Commons and uncommons
PSA 10: $15-30Raw: $2-12Premium: 2x-3x

Grading costs exceed realistic premium on all bulk cards. Out-of-print status doesn't change grading economics for low-value cards. Keep raw for personal collection or trade stock.

Before you submit — PSA checklist, fees, and tips▾

PSA 10 requirements

Centering
55/45 minimum front and back. Modern SIRs frequently fail here — pre-screen every candidate.
Corners
Sharp, no whitening under magnification. Sleeve the moment you pull the card.
Surface
No scratches, print lines, or holo damage. SIR foils are especially vulnerable from the factory.
Edges
No chipping or fraying. Inspect under bright light.

PSA service tiers

Value
$20/card, 4–6 month turnaround. Right for raw values $75–500.
Regular
$50/card, 6–8 week turnaround. Right for raw values $500+.
Express
$75–150/card, 2–3 week turnaround. Only worth it above $1,000 raw.

Budget for a 5-card submission: $135–170 once you add shipping, insurance, and supplies.

Tips from experienced submitters

  • • Pre-screen with a loupe — 70%+ of modern cards fail centering.
  • • PSA Collectors Club ($99/year) pays for itself with 2–3 value-tier submissions.
  • • Ship in batches of 10+ to amortize shipping and insurance.

Why is Silver Tempest sealed product more expensive than MSRP?▾

Silver Tempest is out of print. Pokemon Company stopped producing it after Crown Zenith launched in January 2023. Booster boxes trade close to, and often slightly below, their original retail price, while ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. now run comfortably above MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more.. Silver Tempest is also the last standard SWSH booster box (Crown Zenith never had booster boxes), which adds collector demand beyond just the cards. Budget at current secondary market prices, not MSRP.

What is the Trainer Gallery subset and how does it differ from the Galarian Gallery in Crown Zenith?▾

The Trainer Gallery (TG01-TG30) is a 30-card subset of full-art cards pairing Pokemon with their Trainers, numbered separately from the main set. It was the first gallery concept in SWSH. Crown Zenith expanded it as the Galarian Gallery (70 cards, distinct character border designs). TG cards pull on a different distribution from main set cards. Serena TG, Cynthia's Feelings TG, and Irida TG are the most valuable entries.

Should I open booster boxes or buy singles for Silver Tempest?▾

For the opening experience: 2-3 booster boxes gets you bulk cards and Trainer Gallery variety. For pure completion efficiency, singles-first is better. SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. pull rates are roughly 1 specific SIR per 72 packs, meaning a booster box yields about 0.5 of any specific SIR statistically. Chasing Lugia VSTAR SIR through boxes means spending several times the card's market price for roughly 50% odds, when you could simply buy the single.

How does Silver Tempest compare to Crown Zenith for collecting?▾

Different trade-offs. Silver Tempest has a booster box product (Crown Zenith doesn't), a smaller gallery subset (30 TG · Trainer GalleryA subset of full-art cards in late Sword & Shield sets, showing Pokemon with their Trainers. cards vs 70 Galarian Gallery), and Lugia VSTAR as the top chase card. Lugia has broader generational appeal than Giratina VSTAR. Crown Zenith has a larger gallery with more elaborate border designs and more chase card variety. Silver Tempest costs slightly more to master set complete than Crown Zenith because the Galarian Gallery has more entries driving total cost down. Both are solid SWSH-era collector sets.

What are the actual pull rates for Silver Tempest SIRs?▾

Standard SWSH-era SIR · Special Illustration RareThe top full-art rarity for Pokemon ex and Trainer cards, and usually a set's most valuable cards. pull rate: approximately 1 SIR per 72 packs (1.4% chance per pack). A booster box (36 packs) yields roughly 0.5 SIRs on average, meaning you need 2 boxes to statistically pull 1 SIR. Getting any specific SIR requires 72 packs on average. The Silver Tempest SIR pool has 8-10 cards including Lugia VSTAR, Alolan Vulpix V, Serena, Regidrago VSTAR, Regieleki VSTAR, and Unown V, so opening 3 booster boxes might yield 1-2 SIRs, likely not the specific ones you want.
