Acquisition Strategy
- • Monitor price trends - chase cards often fluctuate based on tournament results and influencer coverage
- • Consider condition flexibility - a LP/MP copy can save 30-50% on vintage cards
- • Check multiple marketplaces - prices vary significantly between TCGPlayer, eBay, and local stores
- • Buy during market dips - major releases and reprints often cause temporary price drops
What's in the Sun & Moon Hidden Fates master set
The Sun & Moon Hidden Fates master set is 125 cards: 68 base + 56 reverse holos + 1 secret rares. That covers every printed variant — reverse holofoils, secret rares, and the special-art chase cards numbered past 68/68.
About this set
Hidden Fates is built around the Shiny Vault: 94 shiny Pokemon cards with gold-star borders, all in one set. Before this, you'd get maybe one or two shiny cards scattered as secret rares across an entire expansion. Hidden Fates put 94 of them in a dedicated subset, and the gold border treatment made each one look premium the moment you pulled it. Shiny Charizard-GX (SV49) is the card everyone talks about: black-skinned Charizard against gold. But the Shiny Vault works because it's not just Charizard. There are 93 other shiny Pokemon that look fantastic lined up in a binder. The distribution matters too. No booster boxes. You had to buy Tins, ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards., or Collection Boxes, which meant fewer total packs entered circulation than a normal set. Pokemon Company ran multiple reprint waves in 2019-2020 and demand still outpaced supply every time. The set is confirmed out of print now. The 163-card master set (69 main + 94 Shiny Vault) is compact enough to finish but expensive enough that completing it actually means something. The main set is cheap to finish and the Shiny Vault is a serious investment, two completely different collecting experiences in the same product.
Where Hidden Fates fits in the era
Hidden Fates launched August 23, 2019, as a special SM-era set inspired by the Japanese GX Ultra Shiny (SM8b, released November 2018). The set arrived during a stable period for the Pokemon TCG, before the explosive 2020-2021 collector boom. At launch, Tins, ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards., and Great Ball Collections all retailed at prices that seem impossible in retrospect. Initial demand was strong but manageable: stores received adequate allocation for the first wave, and collectors could purchase at MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more. for the first few weeks. The Shiny Vault concept was the immediate hook: 94 shiny Pokemon with gold borders represented an unprecedented subset scope. Shiny Charizard-GX quickly established itself as the primary chase card, climbing steadily from launch through early 2020. The October 2020 Logan Paul Base Set opening triggered a collector market surge that engulfed Hidden Fates alongside everything else. Charizard-GX PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 10 prices peaked in mid-2021. Sealed ETBs reached several times their launch price. The set became a symbol of the modern Pokemon collecting boom. Pokemon Company authorized multiple reprint waves through late 2020, but each wave sold through instantly. By 2021, the set was effectively out of print. The 2022-2023 correction brought Shiny Charizard-GX and sealed ETBs down from their peaks, though both remain multiples above launch prices. Hidden Fates emerged from the boom-bust cycle with its blue-chip status intact, now viewed as one of the defining collectible sets of modern Pokemon TCG alongside Evolving Skies and Prismatic Evolutions.
Collecting challenges
Hidden Fates presents a two-tier collecting experience with dramatically different difficulty levels. The main set is straightforward and affordable, requiring no special sourcing effort. The Shiny Vault (94 cards) is where the challenge lives. The sheer cost of completing the Shiny Vault demands careful budget management and strategic purchasing over months or years. Shiny Charizard-GX alone represents a large share of that total, and the temptation to overpay for a quick purchase is constant. The counterfeit problem for Shiny Charizard-GX adds risk to every raw purchase, and authenticating each potential acquisition takes time and knowledge. Beyond Charizard, the mid-tier SV cards seem individually manageable but accumulate quickly when you need dozens of them. Sourcing NM · Near MintA card with at most tiny flaws. Listed prices assume this condition unless they say otherwise. copies with acceptable centering takes patience. The gold borders amplify centering defects, making what would be acceptable centering on a standard card look noticeably off on a Shiny Vault card. Grading-focused collectors face additional challenges: the PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 10 rate for SV cards is moderate (25-35%) due to centering and print quality variance, meaning statistically 2-3 of every 3 submissions return as PSA 9 or lower. For the sealed-to-singles hybrid approach, the economics are unfavorable: packs carry premium pricing and the Charizard odds are long. The math always favors singles purchasing for targeted acquisition, with pack opening reserved for entertainment value rather than collecting efficiency.

Collecting strategy
Most cards in this set are worth around $1.15 as singles. Opening packs is the fun way to build your base of commons and uncommons with a chance at lucky pulls — but chase cards are statistically unlikely from sealed product. For most master set collectors, the smart approach is packs for bulk, singles for the rest.
Mix of singles and strategic pack opening
Complete main set, complete SV non-GX, acquire all mid-tier SV GX. Purchase Shiny Charizard-GX raw NM at the lower end of the market range with careful authentication. Target 140+ of 163 cards. Use eBay auctions for mid-tier SV deals.

What collectors are saying
- Released August 23, 2019 as a special Sun & Moon era set. Hidden Fates is built around the Shiny Vault, a 94-card subset (SV1-SV94) featuring shiny Pokemon with distinctive gold-star borders that immediately became one of the most sought-after subsets in modern Pokemon TCG history.
- Shiny Charizard-GX (SV49) is the card that defines Hidden Fates. It is one of the most valuable modern Pokemon cards and drives the set's premium reputation. The black-skinned shiny Charizard artwork against the gold border is instantly recognizable.
- The set was never sold in standard booster boxes. Hidden Fates was distributed through Tins (featuring Charizard, Gyarados, or Raichu GX), an Elite Trainer Box, Great Ball Collections, and various Pin Collections. This distribution model limited total pack volume compared to standard sets.
- Multiple reprint waves in 2019-2020 failed to meet demand. Each reprint sold out rapidly, creating a cycle of scarcity-driven price spikes followed by temporary corrections when new stock appeared. By late 2020, the set was confirmed out of print.
- The main set covers standard Pokemon-GX gameplay, but the Shiny Vault is the real draw. Shiny Vault cards are pulled from the reverse holo slot, replacing the standard reverse holo, and they appear often enough that shiny pulls are a regular part of opening the set.
- Shiny Vault hierarchy beyond Charizard runs through Mewtwo-GX (SV59), Rayquaza-GX (SV48), Espeon-GX (SV60), Umbreon-GX (SV69), and Cynthia Full Art (SV82), all trading in the same broad tier far below the Charizard. The subset contains both GX and non-GX shiny cards at varying rarities.
- Community consensus puts Hidden Fates alongside Evolving Skies and Prismatic Evolutions as the SM/SV era's most collected special sets. The Shiny Vault concept aged well. Nothing else from 2019 generates this level of sustained interest.
- Sealed product commands massive premiums over original MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more.. Elite Trainer Boxes, Tins, and Great Ball Collections all sell for multiples of their original retail price. The sealed market reflects genuine collector demand for a confirmed out-of-print product.
- Master set completion is a prestige achievement. The 163-card set (69 main + 94 Shiny Vault) represents a serious collecting commitment in total cost. Completing the Shiny Vault is the primary flex. Displaying SV1 through SV94 in sequential order fills 10+ binder pages of shiny Pokemon.
- The 2020-2021 collector boom pushed Hidden Fates prices to all-time highs. Shiny Charizard-GX PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 10 briefly touched multiples of where it trades today. Prices corrected 30-40% by 2023 but remain well above pre-boom levels. The correction brought them back to earth, not to the floor.
- Counterfeit Shiny Charizard-GX cards are common in the secondary market. The card's high value makes it a prime target for sophisticated fakes. Authentication knowledge is essential for any raw purchase of consequence.
- Japanese equivalent is GX Ultra Shiny (SM8b), released November 2018. The Japanese set offers similar artwork at 30-50% lower prices. Japanese Shiny Charizard-GX (SSR) trades at roughly half the English price raw.
Tips from the community
- The Shiny Vault is the entire point of collecting Hidden Fates. Start with the highest-value SV cards (Charizard, Mewtwo, Rayquaza) and work downward. Non-GX shiny cards in the SV1-SV30 range are cheap individually and can be completed affordably.
- Buy Shiny Charizard-GX graded (PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 9 minimum) rather than raw unless you can verify authenticity in person. The card's raw value makes it the most counterfeited modern Pokemon card. PSA-slabbed copies eliminate authentication risk at a 20-30% premium.
- The main set (1-69) is the affordable half of the collection. Most standard GX cards from the main set trade for pocket change. Complete the main set first for a quick sense of progress before tackling the expensive Shiny Vault.
- Target Shiny Vault non-GX cards (SV1-SV30ish) as a separate mini-collection. These feature shiny versions of standard Pokemon with gold borders and trade cheaply enough to collect the complete run without straining a budget.
- Inspect Shiny Vault cards for centering issues. The gold border makes centering defects more visible than standard cards. Off-center gold borders are immediately noticeable and reduce grading potential significantly.
- Grade Shiny Charizard-GX, Mewtwo-GX, and Rayquaza-GX if raw condition is NM · Near MintA card with at most tiny flaws. Listed prices assume this condition unless they say otherwise. with strong centering. PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 10 premiums are substantial (2-5x raw) and justify submission costs. For the cheaper SV GX cards, grade only exceptional copies.
- Consider buying individual sealed Tins if you want the Hidden Fates pack-opening experience. Each Tin contains 4 Hidden Fates packs, enough for reasonable Shiny Vault pulls. ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. contain 10 packs but the premium over individual pack pricing is steep.
- Monitor eBay auctions for lot purchases of Shiny Vault commons. Sellers sometimes list SV1-SV30 lots at 20-30% below individual card prices, saving time and money on the affordable portion of the subset.
- Store all Shiny Vault GX cards (SV31-SV82) in magnetic one-touch holders. These cards carry real value across the board and the gold border treatment is prone to showing edge wear against hard surfaces without proper protection.
- Authenticate raw Shiny Charizard-GX purchases rigorously: check texture consistency (genuine cards have raised, consistent texture ridges), verify the gold border foil under angled light, weigh the card (3.4g standard), and inspect the rosette pattern under magnification.
- The Shiny Vault Cynthia Full Art (SV82) is an overlooked chase card that is still affordable raw. Full Art Trainer Supporters from the SM era are consistently popular, and Cynthia's status as a beloved character sustains demand.
- Plan your budget in three phases. Phase 1: complete main set 1-69. Phase 2: complete Shiny Vault non-GX SV1-SV30. Phase 3: acquire Shiny Vault GX/Full Art SV31-SV94, which carries most of the total cost. This staged approach spreads cost over months.
Market insights
- Shiny Charizard-GX (SV49) is the defining card of Hidden Fates and one of the most valuable modern Pokemon cards, with PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 10 copies commanding several times raw value. Prices stabilized after the 2021-2023 correction at levels 3-5x above pre-2020 values.
- Shiny Mewtwo-GX (SV59) is a strong secondary chase driven by Mewtwo's iconic status. Mewtwo shiny coloration (green tail) is distinctive.
- Shiny Rayquaza-GX (SV48): Dragon-type appeal and Rayquaza's consistent popularity across generations sustain demand.
- Shiny Espeon-GX (SV60) and Shiny Umbreon-GX (SV69) trade close to each other, and the Eeveelution SV pair is collected as a matching set, similar to SM Base versions.
- Cynthia Full Art (SV82) is a Full Art Supporter with strong character appeal. SM-era Full Art Cynthia is one of the most recognized modern Trainer cards.
- Completing the main set costs a small fraction of completing the Shiny Vault. The Shiny Vault represents 85-90% of total set value.
- Sealed ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards., Tins, and Great Ball Collections all trade at multiples of their original MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more.. All confirmed out of print, and sealed product appreciation continues.
- Individual Hidden Fates booster packs still circulate loose at collector prices. Any Shiny Vault card is a reasonably common pull, GX SV cards are far rarer, and Charizard specifically is a genuine long shot.
- 5-year appreciation on key cards has averaged 15-25% annually from pre-boom entry prices. Sealed product has done better at 20-30% annually. The set's out-of-print status and Shiny Vault appeal haven't faded. This is a mature collector market, not speculation.
- PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. grading populations are significant for Shiny Charizard-GX (30,000+ submissions) but the PSA 10 rate is moderate (~25-30%), maintaining meaningful scarcity for top grades. Less popular SV cards have much lower populations.
- Japanese GX Ultra Shiny (SM8b) equivalent: Shiny Charizard-GX SSR trades well below the English version raw. Full Japanese set costs approximately 40-50% of English. Valid alternative for art-focused collectors.
- Market has matured from speculative to collector-driven since 2023. Volume of sales has decreased but average sale price stability indicates real collector demand rather than flipper churn.
Watch out for
- Counterfeit Shiny Charizard-GX cards are extremely common. Its raw value makes this card the most economically viable target for counterfeiters in modern Pokemon. Never buy raw copies without rigorous authentication (texture, weight, light test, magnification).
- Sealed product authentication matters for Hidden Fates at current premiums. Resealed Tins and ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. exist. Verify shrink wrap consistency, seal patterns, and weight before purchasing sealed product above MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more..
- The 2021-2023 price correction reduced values 30-40% from peak. While prices have stabilized, they could correct further if broad Pokemon collecting interest wanes. Buy at current market rates, not with expectations of returning to 2021 peaks.
- Master set completion is a substantial financial commitment. The Shiny Vault's premium pricing means a single damage incident on Shiny Charizard-GX can represent a painful loss. Protect high-value cards immediately.
- Individual Hidden Fates packs are not cost-efficient for completing the Shiny Vault. Charizard odds are long enough that chasing it through packs costs many times the price of the single. Buy singles for targeted acquisition.
- Shiny Vault cards with gold borders make centering defects highly visible. A centering issue that might be PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. 9 on a standard card looks worse on gold-bordered SV cards. Pre-screen centering before purchasing for grading.
- Some Shiny Vault non-GX cards (SV1-SV30) have appreciated surprisingly fast, roughly doubling over the past 2 years. While individually small, the cumulative cost of completing all 30 non-GX cards has increased accordingly.
- No sealed Hidden Fates product is expected to be reprinted. The out-of-print status is confirmed. Sealed prices will continue to rise but may experience short-term dips if large collections are liquidated.
Sun & Moon Hidden Fates grading guide
Which Sun & Moon Hidden Fates cards are worth the $20+/card grading fee? PSA 10 premiums vary significantly by rarity tier. See our complete grading guide for how grading works, costs, and international submission options.
Tier 1 - Grade Immediately
Worth gradingThe top three SV cards all justify grading at current raw values. Charizard PSA 10 premium is massive ($800-2,000 vs $200-400 raw). Pre-screen centering rigorously. The gold border makes centering defects highly visible. PSA 10 rate ~25-30% for Charizard specifically.
Tier 2 - Grade Selectively
Worth gradingMid-tier SV GX cards with strong character appeal justify grading for clearly NM copies. Eeveelution variants and Cynthia have reliable collector demand. Grade only if centering is 55/45 or better and gold border shows no edge wear.
Tier 3 - Conditional
Skip gradingLower-tier SV GX cards have moderate premiums but the grading math is marginal after submission costs ($20-35). Grade only truly exceptional copies, pack-fresh with dead-center centering. Most cards at this tier are better held raw.
Tier 4 - Do Not Grade
Skip gradingGrading fees exceed graded values for most non-GX SV cards and all main set cards below Full Art rarity. Keep raw in binder pages or top loaders. High multipliers are misleading on $3-5 base values.
Before you submit — PSA checklist, fees, and tips▾
PSA 10 requirements
- Centering
- 55/45 minimum front and back. Modern SIRs frequently fail here — pre-screen every candidate.
- Corners
- Sharp, no whitening under magnification. Sleeve the moment you pull the card.
- Surface
- No scratches, print lines, or holo damage. SIR foils are especially vulnerable from the factory.
- Edges
- No chipping or fraying. Inspect under bright light.
PSA service tiers
- Value
- $20/card, 4–6 month turnaround. Right for raw values $75–500.
- Regular
- $50/card, 6–8 week turnaround. Right for raw values $500+.
- Express
- $75–150/card, 2–3 week turnaround. Only worth it above $1,000 raw.
Budget for a 5-card submission: $135–170 once you add shipping, insurance, and supplies.
Tips from experienced submitters
- • Pre-screen with a loupe — 70%+ of modern cards fail centering.
- • PSA Collectors Club ($99/year) pays for itself with 2–3 value-tier submissions.
- • Ship in batches of 10+ to amortize shipping and insurance.
- • PSA 9 typically sells at 40–60% of PSA 10 — still a premium over raw.
