Pokemon GO chase cards & key targets
Mewtwo V leads Pokemon GO at $56.16, with Mewtwo VSTAR ($53.64) and Dragonite VSTAR ($46.21) behind it. The top three alone are 35% of the estimated master-set cost — plan these purchases first and the rest of the set follows on a normal budget.

Acquisition Strategy
- • Monitor price trends - chase cards often fluctuate based on tournament results and influencer coverage
- • Consider condition flexibility - a LP/MP copy can save 30-50% on vintage cards
- • Check multiple marketplaces - prices vary significantly between TCGPlayer, eBay, and local stores
- • Buy during market dips - major releases and reprints often cause temporary price drops
What's in the Pokemon GO master set
The Pokemon GO master set is 145 cards: 78 base + 57 reverse holos + 10 secret rares. That covers every printed variant — reverse holofoils, secret rares, and the special-art chase cards numbered past 78/78.
About this set
No other TCG expansion was designed for two separate fandoms at once. Radiant Pokemon mirror the rare Shiny encounters in Pokemon GO. The phone-screen AR · Art RareThe Japanese name for an Illustration Rare. photo aesthetic runs through card artwork. The peelable Ditto mechanic references the in-game feature where Ditto disguises itself as other Pokemon. The three Team Special Collections let players represent their GO team (Instinct, Mystic, Valor) in physical card form, complete with full-art Spark, Blanche, and Candela trainer cards. These trainer cards have real sentimental weight for long-time GO players in a way most TCG trainers don't. The Mewtwo V Alt Art depicts Mewtwo from the GO legendary raid era and works as both a TCG collectible and a piece of mobile gaming history. For anyone who played Pokemon GO in 2016 or 2017, this set is a physical record of that era. That crossover nostalgia is what drives the collector base, and it's not going away.
Where Pokemon GO fits in the era
The Pokemon GO set released July 1, 2022, as a special expansion in the Sword & Shield series. It was a collaboration between The Pokemon Company International and Niantic Labs, timed to July 2022 as a sixth-anniversary celebration of Pokemon GO's July 2016 launch. The set was the first major TCG crossover with the mobile game, and the release aligned with a Pokemon GO TCG Crossover in-game event (June 16-30, 2022) where players caught TCG-featured Pokemon to earn in-game rewards. The set introduced Radiant Pokemon, a new rarity tier limited to one copy per deck (similar in spirit to the old Pokemon Star mechanic), debuting here and running through Crown Zenith. Distribution was collection-only with no standalone booster packs, limiting total supply compared to main set releases. At 78 base cards plus 10 secrets, it's one of the smaller Sword & Shield special sets.
Collecting challenges
The biggest collecting challenge with this set isn't the pull rates, it's the product format. No standalone booster packs exist, so you're limited to ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. (10 packs), Special Team Collections (6 packs each), and various other collections. The base set is straightforward, but the 10 secret rares (numbered 079/078 through 088/078) include Mewtwo V Alt Art and multiple rainbow rares that are difficult to pull. Then there's the peelable Ditto complication: Bidoof, Numel, and Spinarak each have a reverse holo variant with a hidden Ditto underneath a sticker layer. Collectors who want both states need duplicate copies of all three cards. Throw in the promo-exclusive cards (ETB Mewtwo V promo, one trainer promo per Team Collection) and the true master set is deeper than the official count suggests. On the upside, prices have settled considerably since 2022 and the pure singles route is genuinely affordable, making this one of the cheaper Sword & Shield era completions even with all the complications.

Where to buy
TCGPlayer
singlesPricing: Market · Reliability: high
Best for: Singles purchasing for master set completion, especially for Mewtwo V Alt Art and Dragonite VSTAR
Best source for singles. Use TCGPlayer Direct for faster shipping. Prices on settled 2022 sets don't move fast, so a price alert for Mewtwo V Alt Art is more useful than watching daily. Filter by Near Mint and check seller photos on any card over $20.
Shop Pokemon GO singles on TCGPlayer →Pokemon Center
sealedPricing: MSRP · Reliability: varies
Best for: Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box Plus if restocked, original Team Special Collections
The Pokemon GO set sold through at Pokemon Center in 2022 and hasn't had meaningful restocks since. Don't rely on this as a source in 2025-2026. Check occasionally in case of surprise restocks, but plan around secondary market sources instead.
Local Game Stores
bothPricing: Market · Reliability: medium
Best for: Remaining sealed inventory, singles at near-TCGPlayer prices
Some LGS locations still have leftover Pokemon GO sealed product sitting on shelves at prices below online secondary market. Worth checking before paying eBay prices. Ask store owners specifically about older Sword & Shield era stock they might have in the back.
eBay
bothPricing: Market · Reliability: medium
Best for: Graded copies of Mewtwo V Alt Art, sealed ETBs and Team Collections, bulk card lots
PSA 10 Mewtwo V Alt Art listings appear regularly on eBay. Check sold listings before bidding to verify actual market prices rather than ask prices. Inspect factory seal photos carefully on any sealed product, and avoid third-party sellers without detailed photos and feedback above 98%.
r/pkmntcgtrades
bothPricing: Below Market · Reliability: varies
Best for: Below-market singles trades, bulk commons/uncommons, Team Collection promos
Reference TCGPlayer market prices and offer 10-15% below for bulk lots. Use PayPal Goods & Services for anything over $20. Check flair count before transacting on high-value singles like Mewtwo V Alt Art.
cardmarket (Europe)
singlesPricing: Below Market · Reliability: high
Best for: European buyers seeking below-TCGPlayer prices on Pokemon GO singles
European collectors often find better singles prices on Cardmarket than TCGPlayer for older Sword & Shield sets. Factor in international shipping and longer delivery times. The seller verification system is solid for high-value cards.
When to buy
Singles panic-priced. Sealed carries 30–50% premium. Wait if you can.
Best window for singles. Chase cards find their floor.
Bulk dips 15–20% on reprint news. Chase cards stay steady.
Sealed and top chase cards begin appreciation cycle.
Collecting strategy
Most cards in this set are worth around $0.8 as singles. Opening packs is the fun way to build your base of commons and uncommons with a chance at lucky pulls — but chase cards are statistically unlikely from sealed product. For most master set collectors, the smart approach is packs for bulk, singles for the rest.
Mix of singles and strategic pack opening
Buy one standard ETB (for the Mewtwo V promo and 10 packs of opening experience), all three Team Special Collections (for Spark/Blanche/Candela promos and 18 packs), then buy remaining singles via TCGPlayer. This gives you 28 packs of authentic opening experience at reasonable cost while targeting singles for the expensive cards (Mewtwo V Alt Art, Dragonite VSTAR, Rainbow Rares). NM condition for all cards. Consider peeling one Ditto of each type if you pull duplicates from the packs.
Community insights
From collector discussions, forums, and social media.
What collectors are saying
- The Pokemon GO set pulled in a completely different buyer at launch: mobile game players who had never bought a pack before were suddenly in line at GameStop in July 2022, shoulder to shoulder with veteran TCG collectors hunting Mewtwo VSTAR and Radiant Charizard
- The peel-or-don't-peel Ditto debate split the community and never really resolved. PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. and BGS · Beckett Grading ServicesA card grading company, best known for its Black Label 10. still have no consistent policy on which version is gradeable. Some collectors bought two copies of each peelable card just to have one of each state
- The Radiant Charizard landed with a thud for many collectors. Prices dropped roughly a third between July 2022 and April 2023, partly because the Crown Zenith Radiant Charizard (released January 2023) has the clearly better artwork and overshadowed this version quickly
- Reddit threads from launch week were full of Pokemon GO mobile players asking where to buy just a few packs. The set has no standalone booster packs at all, only collection products, which frustrated casual buyers who didn't want a full ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards.
- The in-game Pokemon GO TCG Crossover Event ran June 16-30, 2022, just days before the July 1 card release. Players were catching Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise for in-game rewards while simultaneously buying their physical cards. The timing was deliberate and it worked
- Finding a peelable Ditto triggered genuine anguish and excitement in equal measure. Three reverse holo cards (Bidoof, Numel, Spinarak) have a hidden Ditto underneath a sticker layer. The Pokemon GO subreddit had daily posts of people agonizing over whether to peel theirs
- The Pokemon GO set turned into a reliable gateway into TCG collecting. YouTube channels and Reddit posts from 2022-2023 regularly featured people opening their very first packs with Pokemon GO product, then describing getting hooked on the hobby afterward
- Sword & Shield special sets have appreciated steadily as a category, and Pokemon GO has an additional tailwind: collectors who played the mobile game in 2016 are now in their late 20s and 30s with disposable income, rediscovering this set as a piece of that era
- The Team Special Collections drove real loyalty-based purchasing from GO players. Team Instinct, Mystic, and Valor fans bought their respective collection first. Blanche, Spark, and Candela trainer cards became sentimental keeps for GO veterans in a way that generic TCG trainer cards rarely achieve
Tips from the community
- The Pokemon GO set has no standalone booster packs. All packs come inside product collections (ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards., Special Collections, Premium Collections, Tins). If you see loose packs for sale, they were removed from a collection and the seller is marking them up. Buy complete sealed products only
- Buy Mewtwo V Alt Art (#079/078) and Mewtwo VSTAR Full Art (#080/078) as singles directly from TCGPlayer. These are the two highest-value cards and the odds of pulling them from product at current sealed prices make pack gambling a bad deal
- The peelable Ditto cards (Bidoof, Numel, Spinarak reverse holo variants) force a decision. Buy two copies of each if you want both states (peeled Ditto visible, unpeeled sticker intact) for display. Most master set collectors keep one of each
- You need all three Team Special Collections (Instinct, Mystic, Valor) for a complete master set. Each contains 6 packs plus the exclusive trainer promo for that team. Buy all three at the same time rather than hunting individual promo singles later, which costs more
- The Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box Plus had 12 packs versus 10 in the standard ETB, plus metal accessories and an exclusive promo. It now trades well above MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more.. Only buy it if you specifically need that exclusive promo card and can't find it cheaper as a single
- The three Radiant Pokemon (Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise) each appear once in the set. Each is limited to one copy per deck in competitive play. At current raw prices, grading only makes sense for obviously gem mint copies you pull yourself
- Radiant Charizard from this set now sits well below its launch highs. If you want a budget Charizard for your collection, this is one of the cheapest options in the Sword & Shield era. Just know the Crown Zenith version has better artwork
- Japanese Pokemon GO cards (set S10b) use the same artwork with different card borders and card stock. The Japanese Radiant Charizard trades at a premium over the English version. If you prefer Japanese card quality, the GO set is a reasonable place to start a Japanese collection
- The base set is completable from 2-3 ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. plus a handful of targeted singles. Budget the most for the 10 secret rares numbered above 078, particularly Mewtwo V Alt Art and Dragonite VSTAR
Market insights
- Mewtwo V Alt Art (#079/078) has settled well below its launch price. It's held its value better than most cards in the set because it's the only card that depicts Mewtwo as GO players remember him from the legendary raid era
- Mewtwo VSTAR Rainbow Rare (#080/078) and Gold Secret Rare versions are among the cheaper VSTAR Rainbow Rares in the Sword & Shield era to collect, which matters if you're building a complete-era rainbow rare collection
- Dragonite VSTAR Secret Rare (#081/078) is the second most valuable card in the set. Dragonite was one of the most sought-after Pokemon in early Pokemon GO (the era when 3000 CP Dragonites were the meta), which drives collector demand beyond just TCG interest
- Radiant Charizard sits far below its launch price. Crown Zenith's Radiant Charizard released in January 2023 with a stronger art and absorbed most Radiant Charizard collector demand. The GO version hasn't recovered
- Standard ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. now trade at a multiple of original MSRP · Suggested retail priceThe official US retail price set by The Pokemon Company. Stores and resellers often charge more.. That's real appreciation for a three-year-old special set. Collection-only distribution means total sealed supply is lower than main sets of the same era, and it's been quietly draining since 2022
- There are no standalone booster packs. Total supply is whatever was produced inside collections, which is lower than comparable main-set expansions from the same period. Stock has been slowly absorbed since July 2022 with no reprints
- Community pull rate data puts Radiant Pokemon at roughly 4.6% per pack. Every pack guarantees at least a rare holo or better, so the opening experience is consistently rewarding even if you don't hit Mewtwo V Alt Art
- Pure singles route to complete the master set is unusually affordable in 2025-2026 for a Sword & Shield era set with a Charizard. The GO version's Charizard simply doesn't command the premium other Charizard sets do
- Sealed ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. from this set have appreciated faster than peer special sets like Champion's Path. The crossover demographic is part of it: mobile game nostalgia buyers keep entering the market as the 2022 Pokemon GO era recedes further into the past
Watch out for
- There are no standalone booster packs for this set. Packs sold individually on eBay or Facebook Marketplace were removed from collections by someone who wanted a quick flip. You're paying a per-pack markup for product that costs less inside a sealed ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards. or team collection
- Peeling the Ditto cards is irreversible. Once the sticker layer comes off a Bidoof/Numel/Spinarak reverse holo, there's no putting it back. If you might want to grade or sell the card, buy a second copy first
- PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. and other grading services don't have a consistent policy on peeled vs unpeeled Ditto cards. Check the current policy for whichever grader you use before submitting either form. This is a real complication, not a minor technicality
- The Radiant Charizard in this set is not the collector-consensus Radiant Charizard. Crown Zenith's version (released January 2023) has better artwork and trades higher. Don't overpay for the GO version thinking it will catch up
- The base numbered sequence doesn't tell the whole story: the set continues into secret rares numbered 079/078 through 088/078. If a seller offers you a 'complete set' that stops at the base numbering, it's missing the most expensive cards
- Some third-party sellers list 'Pokemon GO booster boxes' that are repackaged product or loose collections passed off as boxes. This set never had a traditional 36-pack booster box. If you see one listed for sale, it's either fake, repackaged, or misrepresented
- Master set completion requires promo cards from specific products: the Mewtwo V promo comes in the standard ETB · Elite Trainer BoxA retail box with booster packs (usually nine), a promo card, sleeves, dice and Energy cards., and the three trainer cards (Spark, Blanche, Candela) come one each in the Team Instinct, Team Mystic, and Team Valor Special Collections. Budget for all four products
Pokemon GO grading guide
Which Pokemon GO cards are worth the $20+/card grading fee? PSA 10 premiums vary significantly by rarity tier. See our complete grading guide for how grading works, costs, and international submission options.
Tier 1 - Mandatory Grading
Worth gradingThe chase card of the set and one of the cleaner Alt Art designs in the Sword & Shield era. PSA 10 copies trade at real premiums over raw. Centering can be tight on this card, so inspect carefully before submitting. Only grade copies with 60/40+ centering and clean surfaces.
Tier 2 - Recommended Grading
Worth gradingDragonite VSTAR is the second most valuable card in the set. Dragonite has a dedicated collector base from the GO era when high-CP Dragonites were the meta, which keeps demand independent of TCG hype cycles. VSTAR Rainbow Rares from the Sword & Shield era have appreciated steadily. Grade only pristine, well-centered copies with investment intent.
Tier 3 - Selective Grading
Worth gradingRadiant Pokemon are single-print cards, but raw prices are low enough that grading costs eat most of the premium. Only submit copies that are obviously gem mint. Melmetal VMAX Secret has niche appeal to Melmetal fans and completionists specifically chasing the GO set.
Tier 4 - Not Worth Grading
Skip gradingGrading costs ($20-75+) wipe out any value gain on these. Peelable Ditto cards add another complication: inconsistent grader policies on peeled vs unpeeled states make them unpredictable submissions. Keep everything in this tier raw unless you're building a personal PSA 10 master set display.
Before you submit — PSA checklist, fees, and tips▾
PSA 10 requirements
- Centering
- 55/45 minimum front and back. Modern SIRs frequently fail here — pre-screen every candidate.
- Corners
- Sharp, no whitening under magnification. Sleeve the moment you pull the card.
- Surface
- No scratches, print lines, or holo damage. SIR foils are especially vulnerable from the factory.
- Edges
- No chipping or fraying. Inspect under bright light.
PSA service tiers
- Value
- $20/card, 4–6 month turnaround. Right for raw values $75–500.
- Regular
- $50/card, 6–8 week turnaround. Right for raw values $500+.
- Express
- $75–150/card, 2–3 week turnaround. Only worth it above $1,000 raw.
Budget for a 5-card submission: $135–170 once you add shipping, insurance, and supplies.
Tips from experienced submitters
- • Pre-screen with a loupe — 70%+ of modern cards fail centering.
- • PSA Collectors Club ($99/year) pays for itself with 2–3 value-tier submissions.
- • Ship in batches of 10+ to amortize shipping and insurance.
- • PSA 9 typically sells at 40–60% of PSA 10 — still a premium over raw.
Storage & protection
Protect your 145-card Pokemon GO master set with archival binders, perfect-fit sleeves, and top loaders for the chase cards. Plan on $150–250 for complete coverage.
Premium binders
Dragon Shield Codex · $30–50
Archival pages, side-loading pockets, acid-free. For 145 cards, plan on 9 double-sided 9-pocket pages.
Perfect-fit sleeves
Every card · $30–50 total
Prevent micro-scratches from sliding cards in and out of binder pockets. You'll need roughly 2 packs for full coverage.
Top loaders
Chase cards · $15–25/pack
Rigid protection for SIRs and grading candidates. Essential for anything over $14 raw.

Does the Pokemon GO set have booster boxes?▾
No. The set was distributed only through collection products. There was no traditional 36-pack booster box. The primary pack-delivery products were the Elite Trainer Box (10 packs), Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box Plus (12 packs), and Team Special Collections (6 packs each for Team Instinct, Mystic, and Valor). If you see a listing for a 'Pokemon GO booster box,' it's likely a repackaged or unofficial product. The ETB was the closest thing to a booster box for this set.
How does the peelable Ditto mechanic work?▾
Three cards in the set (Bidoof, Numel, and Spinarak) have reverse holo versions with a Ditto icon in the bottom-left corner. These cards have a sticker outer layer that peels off to reveal a holographic Ditto card underneath. The Ditto underneath is the only way to obtain Ditto from this set. The sticker layer showing Bidoof/Numel/Spinarak is not a legal card for official tournament play. Once you peel it, that's permanent.
Should I peel or not peel the Ditto cards?▾
Grading companies have not settled on a consistent policy. Some treat the peeled Ditto as the final card state. Others accept both versions. If you have only one copy, check current PSA · Professional Sports AuthenticatorThe largest card grading company. A PSA 10 is its top grade and carries the biggest price premium. and CGC policies before doing anything irreversible. For master set completion, the cleanest approach is buying two copies of each: keep one unpeeled, peel one. That way you have both states without having to choose.
What promos are required for a complete master set?▾
Four promo cards come exclusively from specific products. The Mewtwo V promo comes in the standard Elite Trainer Box. The Spark trainer promo comes only in the Team Instinct Special Collection. Blanche comes only in Team Mystic. Candela comes only in Team Valor. You need to acquire all three Team Collections to get all three trainer promos. Budget for all four products, or find the promos as singles on TCGPlayer.
How does the Pokemon GO set compare to other Sword & Shield special sets?▾
In terms of set size and completion difficulty, the Pokemon GO set sits between Shining Fates and Crown Zenith. Like Celebrations, it has crossover appeal that brought in buyers outside the core TCG collector base. Unlike Shining Fates or Crown Zenith, there's no Shiny Vault or Galarian Gallery sub-set to worry about. The peelable Ditto mechanic and Team Collection promos are what make master set completion more complicated than it looks at first glance.
Did the Pokemon GO in-game event affect card prices?▾
Yes. The TCG Crossover Event in Pokemon GO (June 16-30, 2022, right before the July 1 card release) pulled a wave of mobile game players into the TCG market who would not otherwise have bought cards. Mewtwo V Alt Art briefly spiked, then gave back more than half of that peak within the first week after launch. Once the GO player excitement cooled down, prices found their real level based on actual TCG collector demand.
