Pitch Black master set: what 51 days of data show

Pitch Black released on 2026-07-17. Long enough for the launch premium to burn off and for collectors to decide what they actually want. Every figure below comes from Cardrake’s own price history and collections, snapshotted 2026-09-06.

Summary

The short version

A master set costs about half what it did at launch, and the people building one mostly get there. Most of the bill sits in ten cards; the rest of the set is pocket change.

  • Most people who start actually finish. 82% of collectors are more than half done and 24% hold at least 90% of the set, complete copies among them. Only 4.5% took a chase card and stopped.
  • The bill halved in 6 weeks. $1,699 during release week, $836 by week 6. Most of the fall happened in the first seven days after release, when it dropped to $1,046.
  • Ten cards carry 84% of the cost. The cheapest sixty cards in the set total $12.51 between them.
  • Demand outruns supply only at the top. 6 of the 12 most-wanted cards have more collectors wanting them than owning them, and every one is an illustration rare or the gold. Nothing below that tier gets close. The strongest of them manages 0.64 wanters per owner.
  • Chase cards sit unfilled longest. An open want on a Special Illustration Rare has stood 28.3 days on average, against 20 on an Uncommon.
  • Collecting starts before the set does. The week before release already reached 10% of the launch-week peak.

Cost

Half the cost of a master set burned off in six weeks

Waiting is worth roughly $864 on this set so far. The binder planner prices every slot live, so you can watch the same number move.

Buying every card and every reverse-holo slot cost $1,699 during release week. Six weeks later the same 194 slots cost $836. The single steepest week was the first one after release, not the launch itself.

Completion

A master set is a thing people finish

The average collector holds 84.9 of the 120 cards, and 2.76 of the ten most expensive.

82% of Pitch Black collectors are more than halfway through the set. 24% hold at least 90% of it, with finished copies among them. The median collector is at 78.3%, and the cherry-picking most people assume is the norm, grabbing the chase card and ignoring the rest, is 4.5% of them.

Concentration

Ten cards, 84% of the bill

The ten priciest cards hold 84% of everything the set is worth, and it concentrates further than that: the six special illustration rares and the gold are 7 cards carrying 79% between them. The grid below puts rarity against what a single card costs, and the money falls along a diagonal. Each rarity sits in its own price band with almost no overlap. The cheapest half of the set totals $12.51, all sixty of those cards together.

Demand

The wishlist stops at the illustration rares

Below the line the picture reverses. 6 cards here are owned by more collectors than want them. They come out of packs often enough that wanting one is temporary. Morpeko ex is the exception at 0.89. Most of the people who wanted it have already landed it.

Mega Darkrai ex 116 is on 67% of Pitch Black wishlists and in 15% of collections. That is 1.88 people wanting it for every one who has landed it. Run the same ratio down the list and it crosses 1.0 in exactly one place: the boundary between the illustration rares and everything below them.

Patience

What stays on the list

Wants that are still open have been open longer at the top of the set. A Special Illustration Rare gap has stood 28.3 days on average and 44% of them have lasted four weeks or more. An Uncommon gap averages 20 days. Cheap cards get filled; the expensive ones are what people are still waiting on.

Attention

What people look up, and what they want

Page views and wishlists rank the set differently, and the honest reading of that is narrow. Views follow search rankings, which we have not adjusted for. A card other sites write about collects visits whether or not anyone wants it. Among the chase cards the two rankings barely move against each other, so treat the small gaps as noise.

Timing

Collecting starts before the set does

Cards were going into binders the week before release, 10% of what the launch week itself would see. Logging peaks in release week, then settles into a long tail rather than stopping. Seven weeks on, people are still filling gaps.

Method

Where these numbers come from

Prices come from TCGplayer. Everything about collectors comes from Cardrake collections. The two are kept apart because they answer different questions.

The prices are TCGplayer market values, recorded daily and rolled into weekly medians. A master set is priced by the slot: every card, plus a second slot for each card that also exists as a reverse holo. 194 slots in total.

The collector figures are what Cardrake collectors own and what they have on their wishlists for this set, as of 2026-09-06. One caveat worth stating, because it is easy to misread. The wishlist ages measure how long an unfilled want has stayed unfilled. They do not measure how often wants get filled.

Questions

Common questions

The questions that come up most when someone is deciding whether to build this one.

How much does a Pitch Black master set cost?

About $836 at market prices as of 2026-09-06, covering all 120 cards plus the 74 reverse-holo slots. It cost $1,699 during release week, so the bill has fallen 50.8% in 6 weeks.

Which Pitch Black card do collectors want most?

Mega Darkrai ex 116 (Special Illustration Rare). It sits on 67% of Pitch Black wishlists while 15% of collectors own it That is 1.88 wanters for every owner, the widest gap in the set.

Do people actually finish a Pitch Black master set?

Most of them get close. 82% of Pitch Black collectors are more than halfway through the set and 24% hold at least 90% of it, with complete copies among them. The median collector is at 78.3%. Only 4.5% took a chase card and stopped there.

Is now a good time to build one?

Cheaper than it has been. The set cost $1,699 to complete during release week and $836 at the 2026-09-06 snapshot. That is $864 off the bill, and the weekly falls have shrunk from a third to a few percent, so the steep part is behind it.

Are Pitch Black prices still falling?

Yes, but the slide has flattened. The set lost most of its value in the first week after release, and the last few weeks have each taken off a few percent rather than a third.

How many cards are in a Pitch Black master set?

194 slots: 120 distinct cards, of which 74 also exist as a reverse holo. The printed set number is 84, so 36 cards sit past the printed total as secret rares.

Where does this data come from?

TCGplayer market prices, recorded daily since the set released, and the collections of Cardrake collectors as of 2026-09-06. Every chart has a CSV and an embed.
