The storyThe frog that out-priced the chase cards
Seismitoad was not supposed to be a story. It is a Stage 2 water/ground frog from Unova, the kind of card most people file under filler. Then Black Bolt landed in July 2025, the singles market settled, and this Illustration Rare did the opposite of what most post-launch cards do. It climbed. It started trading above several higher-rarity cards in the same set, which is not how the rarity ladder is supposed to work.

The reason is two words: Shinji Kanda. Collectors track his name by reflex, and an IR with his signature on it gets bought before anyone checks whether the Pokemon is popular. Seismitoad is the clearest proof of that effect in Black Bolt. The art carried a card that pull rate and fan-favorite status alone would never have lifted.
For master set builders this is a budget line you cannot skip and probably underestimated. It sits in the IR tier on paper, but it behaves like a small chase card on the secondary market.
By the numbersMarket analysis
This is a strong upper-tier Illustration Rare. It is not a top-of-set headliner, but it punches above its rarity bracket. The notable part is that it has changed hands above cards sitting higher on the official rarity ladder, which tells you the demand is artist-driven rather than rarity-driven.
Most Black Bolt singles softened after the launch supply wave. Seismitoad held firm, and in stretches it moved up instead. That is rare for an IR and a big reason it gets talked about.
The upside is tied to Kanda's reputation holding, and so far it has held. The risk is that artist hype can cool, and an IR of a non-popular Pokemon has less of a fan floor than a Charizard or a starter would. Buy it because you want the card and need the slot, not as a flip.
Modern IRs only carry a meaningful graded premium at the top grades. A clean PSA 10 or CGC 10 commands a real step up over raw, while lower gem grades track close to raw plus the cost of grading. Centering and edge whitening on the dark borders are the usual problems here.
In Scarlet & Violet sets you can expect any Illustration Rare roughly once every 12 packs, but that figure pools every IR in the set together. Black Bolt and White Flare gave nearly the whole Unova dex an IR or SIR, so the pool is deep. The odds of pulling this specific Seismitoad run far longer than 1 in 12, easily into the hundreds of packs. For reference within the set's ladder, Special Illustration Rares fall around 1 in 90, and the Hyper Rare gold cards land somewhere in the 1 in 300 to 700 range. Buying the single is the sane way to slot this one.
On paper an IR is a common chase tier. What makes this card stand out is that its market price has behaved like something a rarity step or two higher, driven by the artist rather than the pull odds.
ArtworkWhy the art matters

Kanda is one of the artists collectors now seek out by name. The pattern is consistent across his work. Whatever Pokemon he draws, the card tends to outperform expectations on the secondary market, from legendaries down to ordinary creatures. That reputation has turned into a self-reinforcing loop. Buyers chase Kanda cards because Kanda cards go up, and they go up because buyers chase them.
Seismitoad sits in a loud, psychedelic scene. The frog strikes a joyful, open pose surrounded by swirling floral, fractal-like patterns. The palette is bright and busy, heavy on greens, reds, blues and pinks, closer to a print or textile design than a typical creature portrait. It is the kind of card that stops you mid flip-through, which is exactly why it sells.
Standard Scarlet & Violet Illustration Rare treatment: a full-art frame with the textured IR holo pattern across the whole card face. No alternate Poke Ball or Master Ball parallel exists for the IR tier, so there is one print to chase here.
It is the cleanest example in Black Bolt of art alone moving a card. No nostalgia case, no competitive case, no fan-favorite case. Just an illustration good enough, and an artist hot enough, to override all of that.
BackgroundAbout Seismitoad
Seismitoad is the final form of Tympole, a water/ground line introduced in Generation V's Unova region. Black Bolt and White Flare were built around the original Unova Pokedex, giving nearly every Unova Pokemon a new Illustration Rare or Special Illustration Rare. That is how a mid-tier frog ended up with a premium card at all.
- ›Part of the all-Unova theme of the Black Bolt/White Flare set
- ›The Shinji Kanda illustration doing the heavy lifting
- ›The post-launch price climb giving it a reputation beyond the Pokemon itself
- ›A required entry for anyone completing the Black Bolt master set
- ›Generation V (Black/White) as the Tympole line's final evolution
- ›This Illustration Rare in the 2025 Black Bolt expansion
Seismitoad has had competitive moments in past formats, but this card is a collector piece. The IR is not a tournament staple, and demand here is entirely about the art and the set, not the play table.

Modern SV Illustration Rares are most vulnerable on the dark full-art borders, where edge whitening shows instantly, and on centering, which the textured holo makes easy to misjudge in photos. Check the corners and the back centering before paying a premium.
Worth grading only if the raw copy looks gem-clean out of the sleeve. The premium lives almost entirely at PSA 10 or CGC 10. A 9 or a lower gem grade often nets little over raw once you subtract grading fees. Inspect under good light first. Read the grading guide →
Penny sleeve plus a top loader, or a one-touch, the moment you get it. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from humidity. For a card priced like a small chase, treat it like one. See the storage guide →
Buy the single, do not chase it from packs. Prices can swing with Kanda sentiment, so watch recent sold listings rather than asking prices, and do not overpay during a hype spike. For a master set, a clean raw NM copy is the right buy. Chase a graded 10 only if you specifically want a slabbed example. See the singles buying guide →
Modern SV cards are far less faked than vintage, but verify the IR texture is present across the full art, check the holo behaves correctly when tilted, and confirm the set symbol and 105/086 number. Be cautious of proxies sold as cheap raw copies.

Widely called one of the best-looking cards in Black Bolt, and the go-to example when collectors talk about Shinji Kanda's market pull. The recurring reaction is surprise that a Seismitoad of all Pokemon became a card people fight over.
- ›Repeatedly reported trading above several higher-rarity cards from the same Black Bolt set, which is what put it on collectors' radar
Most of the chatter centers on the price climb and on Kanda as an artist whose cards reliably outrun expectations. There are some fringe theories online about hidden details in the art, but those are unverified and not the reason for the demand.
