The storyThe opening promo of the Mega Evolution era, with a Wild Growth callback
Meganium MEP 001 is the lead-off card in the Mega Evolution Promos set, the numbered black star promo line that kicked off the 2025 Mega Evolution block. It was one of four foil promos seeded into Build & Battle Boxes for the Mega Evolution prerelease, alongside Inteleon, Alakazam, and Lunatone, numbered MEP 001 through 004. If you went to a prerelease event in September 2025, this is one of the cards you might have walked away with.
“MEP 001, the first card in the Mega Evolution Promos numbering”
What makes it fun for longtime players is the Ability. Wild Growth makes each Basic Grass Energy attached to all your Pokemon provide double Grass Energy. That name and effect are a callback to the Neo Genesis Meganium from 2000, which carried a Wild Growth Poke-Power that doubled Grass Energy the same way. Pair the Ability with a 140-damage Solar Beam and you get a card that nods to vintage from inside a brand new set. The art, by Uninori, puts Meganium in a forest setting and leans into its calm, forest-guardian identity.
As a collectible it sits at the accessible end. Prerelease promos like this are common relative to the set's real chase cards, so it lands near the bottom of the value chart. The pull here is nostalgia and set completion.
By the numbersMarket analysis
This sits at the affordable end of the Mega Evolution era. As a prerelease promo printed in quantity through Build & Battle Boxes, it carries little scarcity premium and lands well below the set's actual chase cards. Treat it as a low-cost pickup, not an investment.
Promos like this usually see a small bump right around prerelease while supply is thin, then settle once boxes hit the secondary market. Expect a flat, low baseline. Most of the value lives in graded gem-mint copies rather than raw.
Low ceiling. This is a completionist and player card more than a flip. The upside is modest and mostly limited to clean graded copies. Buy it because you want it in the binder, not because you expect it to climb.
There can be a real gap between a raw copy and a top-grade slab, since prerelease and Build & Battle promos often arrive with handling wear. The premium is on condition scarcity, not the card itself. At this value tier, grading only makes sense if you already have a clean copy and want it slabbed.
You don't pull this from regular booster packs. It was distributed as one of four foil promos inside Mega Evolution Build & Battle Boxes at the prerelease, so a given box had roughly a one in four shot at this specific promo, with the rest landing Inteleon, Alakazam, or Lunatone. Once boxes hit retail and the secondary market, supply is steady, which keeps it on the affordable end. The staff-stamped version is scarcer than the standard promo.
Set against the Mega Evolution chase cards, this promo is plentiful and inexpensive. Its scarcity story lives in the staff-stamped variant and in high grades, not the base card.
ArtworkWhy the art matters

Uninori has illustrated across recent Pokemon TCG sets. For this card the brief was a friendly portrait of Meganium rather than a dramatic full-art scene, which fits the role of an accessible prerelease promo.
The card shows Meganium in a forest setting as a gentle Grass-type. The composition keeps the focus on the Pokemon itself, with its large petal collar front and center.
Standard holofoil promo treatment with the black star promo stamp. A staff-stamped variant was distributed to prerelease tournament organizers, which is a distinct collectible from the base promo.
The hook is recognition. A Wild Growth Meganium reads as a tribute to the Neo Genesis card for anyone who played in the early 2000s, and that connection is what carries the art.
BackgroundAbout Meganium 001
Meganium is the final evolution of Chikorita, the Grass-type starter from Generation II's Johto region. It evolves from Bayleef and has been a fan favorite since Gold and Silver. In the lore it has a soothing presence, the kind of Pokemon the Pokedex describes as refreshing anyone who stands beside it.
- ›Johto starter status and Gold/Silver nostalgia
- ›Distinctive petal-collar design that stands out among Grass-types
- ›Long TCG history dating back to Neo Genesis
- ›Steady appeal with collectors who chase a specific favorite Pokemon
- ›Generation II starter line in Pokemon Gold and Silver
- ›Neo Genesis TCG Meganium, the original Wild Growth card this promo echoes
Wild Growth plus a four-energy Solar Beam gives this card a clear role in a Grass energy-acceleration build, but as a Stage 2 promo it's more of a casual and prerelease-deck inclusion than a Standard staple. Most of its life will be in fun decks and binders.
Own it wellCollector guide
Build & Battle and prerelease promos commonly show edge whitening and surface handling from box packaging and play. Check the foil for scratches and inspect the corners, since clean copies are less common than the print run suggests.
For most collectors, raw in a sleeve is enough at this value tier. Only grade if you have a clearly gem-mint copy, or if you want a slabbed staff-stamped variant where condition scarcity does the work. Read the grading guide →
Penny sleeve plus a top loader for a single, or a side-loading binder page for set completion. Keep it out of direct light to protect the holo, standard for any foil promo. See the storage guide →
Buy raw and cheap. If you want the strongest version, prioritize a clean copy or the staff-stamped variant, which carries more interest than the plain promo. There's no reason to overpay here. Supply is healthy. See the singles buying guide →
Confirm the MEP 001 number, the black star promo stamp, the Wild Growth Ability text, and Uninori as illustrator. For the stamped version, match the staff stamp against known examples before paying a premium.

Reception has been warm but low-key. Players liked the Wild Growth callback to Neo Genesis, and Johto fans were happy to see Meganium lead off the promo numbering. It reads as a nice prerelease pickup rather than a card anyone is hunting hard.
Discussion has centered on the four prerelease promos as a group, with ranking posts comparing Meganium, Inteleon, Alakazam, and Lunatone. Meganium tends to land mid-pack in those rankings, valued more for nostalgia than power or scarcity.
