The storyThe songstress of Pitch Black's Illustration Rare lineup
Pitch Black is the smallest English set of the Mega Evolution era so far, an 84-card base list with 36 secret rares stacked on top. That compression works in Primarina's favor. With fewer Illustration Rares competing for attention, satoma's full-art take on the Alolan water starter's final stage climbed into the set's top five by market value, sitting behind the Mega Darkrai ex tier but ahead of the rest of the IR pool.
“Full-art Illustration Rare by satoma, numbered 088/084 in the secret rare range”
Primarina has a loyal collector base. The Popplio line was divisive when Sun and Moon launched, then won people over, and the final evolution has been a reliable draw for artists ever since. The card also does something at the table. Its Enriching Melody ability heals all damage from one of your Pokemon when you evolve into Primarina from hand, which gives it a small playable footprint on top of the binder appeal.
For master set builders, this is one of the IRs to budget for early. It is not a lottery pull like the set's Special Illustration Rares, but it is priced above its rarity peers.
By the numbersMarket analysis
This sits at the top of Pitch Black's Illustration Rare tier, a mid-two-figure card in raw condition. Only the Special Illustration Rares and the Mega Darkrai ex chase tier clear it. Among IRs in this set, it trades above everything else at the same rarity.
Two weeks in, the usual dip arrived as supply built and the wide early listings converged. Where Primarina lands relative to the other IRs long-term depends on whether the demand that separated it from the pool at launch keeps holding — so far it has.
Reasonable hold for a modern IR, but be honest about the ceiling. Modern Illustration Rares from heavily printed sets rarely appreciate in the first year. The case for this one is relative: it is the strongest IR in a small set, and starter Pokemon full arts tend to keep a floor. Buy it because you want it in the binder, not as an investment thesis.
Too early for meaningful graded population data. Modern IRs typically need a gem mint grade to justify grading fees, and the raw-to-graded spread on a mid-two-figure card is thin. Wait for prices to settle before sending copies in, unless you pull a flawless one.
Precise pull rates for the Mega Evolution era sets are still being compiled from community pack-opening data. In the preceding Scarlet and Violet era, any Illustration Rare showed up about once every 12 packs, and Mega Evolution era sets appear to run in a similar range. The catch is specificity. Pitch Black has multiple IRs, so landing this exact Primarina takes considerably longer, often north of a booster box's worth of packs. Buying the single is almost always cheaper than chasing it.
Within Pitch Black, this is the IR punching above its weight. The other Illustration Rares in the set trade at a fraction of this card's price. Compared to IRs across the Mega Evolution era, it sits in the upper band, closer to the popular starter and fan-favorite IRs from earlier sets than to the forgettable middle of an IR list.
ArtworkWhy the art matters

satoma is a Pokemon TCG illustrator working in the modern full-art era. The Illustration Rare format, introduced in Scarlet and Violet and carried into the Mega Evolution era, gives illustrators a full frame to work with rather than the standard art box.
A full-art Illustration Rare print of Primarina, the Soloist Pokemon. The IR slot in these sets goes to painterly, scene-driven pieces, and Primarina hands an artist strong material: a singer that performs on moonlit nights and leads its colony in song, dropped into a set named Pitch Black. satoma got the full frame for it.
Illustration Rare holofoil with the full-frame art treatment, numbered 088/084, above the base set count. The regular print of this same card, 020/084, uses different artwork by Taira Akitsu, so the IR is a distinct piece rather than a foil upgrade.
Two things. First, the IR slot gets its own commissioned artwork, not a reframe of the base card. Second, this print became the card collectors point to when asked which Pitch Black IR to grab first, and the early price separation backs that up.
BackgroundAbout Primarina
Primarina is the final evolution of Popplio, the Water-type starter from Pokemon Sun and Moon (2016). It is classified as the Soloist Pokemon, a Water and Fairy type in the games, known for singing on moonlit nights in front of the colony it leads. The Popplio line had a rocky start with fans but Primarina turned opinion around, and it now ranks among the better-liked starter final stages of the 3D era.
- ›Starter Pokemon final evolutions carry built-in collector demand across every set they appear in
- ›The songstress and moonlight identity gives artists strong material to work with
- ›Alola-era nostalgia is building as Sun and Moon players age into collecting
- ›Debuted in Pokemon Sun and Moon (2016) as Popplio's final evolution
- ›Appeared in the Pokemon anime as the evolved form of Lana's Popplio in the Sun and Moon series
Enriching Melody, which heals all damage from one of your Pokemon when you evolve into Primarina from hand, is a useful effect in slower decks, and Aqua Return hits for 120 before shuffling this Pokemon and everything attached back into the deck. It is a casual and league-level card rather than a tournament staple, but the ability keeps player copies moving.
Own it wellCollector guide
Modern IR holofoil stock from this era handles reasonably well out of the pack, but check the textured surface for print lines and the dark borders for edge wear. Dark-bordered cards in a set called Pitch Black show whitening fast. Inspect corners under angled light before buying raw.
Hold off for now. Graded populations barely exist two weeks in, and the raw price does not leave much room after grading fees unless you hit the top grade. If you pull a pack-fresh copy with clean centering, sleeve it immediately and revisit grading once the market settles in the fall. Read the grading guide →
Penny sleeve plus semi-rigid or a fitted toploader, stored upright away from light. If it goes in the master set binder, use side-loading pages and keep the binder vertical so the holofoil surface does not press-mark. See the storage guide →
Launch-window prices are the worst prices. If you can wait three to six weeks, supply from case openings usually softens IR prices noticeably. If you are buying now, insist on clear photos of both dark borders and the holo surface. For master set purposes, remember you also need the Taira Akitsu regular print, which costs pocket change by comparison. See the singles buying guide →
Counterfeit risk is low for a card at this price point, but standard checks apply: the textured full-art surface should have a tactile pattern, the holofoil should shift smoothly under light, and the card back should show the standard blue swirl gradient without blurriness. Buy from established sellers during the launch window when listings churn fast.

Early reception is positive. Set reviews of Pitch Black focus on the Mega Darkrai ex chase tier, but Primarina comes up consistently when the Illustration Rares get ranked, and its price separation from the rest of the IR pool reflects that. Two weeks in, the signal is holding.
It is early for settled community chatter. The set launched over the past weekend, so most of what circulates right now is pack-opening content and first-look rankings. Starter Pokemon IRs reliably generate binder-page posts once a set matures, and the early pricing suggests Primarina fans showed up for this one.
