The trio maps to Norse mythology: Xerneas is the stag atop Yggdrasil, Yveltal is the death eagle, and Zygarde is Nidhogg, the serpent gnawing at the World Tree's roots. Zygarde is a collective organism made of Cells (green hexagons, no independent will) and Cores (red hexagons, act as the brain).
